The legendary midfielder remains available for international duty, keeping alive his remarkable career with the national team even as questions continue to surround how much longer he will remain at the highest level.
Modrić, who turned 40 in September 2025, has already established himself as one of the most decorated players in Croatian football history. According to the Croatian Football Federation, he has made 202 appearances for Croatia and scored 29 goals since making his senior debut in 2006.
His continued availability is particularly significant because Modrić has already experienced several major international tournaments with Croatia, including the 2018 World Cup, when he led the country to its first-ever World Cup final and won the Ballon d’Or later that year.
The midfielder has also remained influential in the UEFA Nations League. During Croatia’s 2024 Nations League campaign, Modrić started against Portugal in November and played 78 minutes as Croatia drew 1-1 and advanced to the quarter-finals.
He also started Croatia’s 1-0 defeat to Scotland in Glasgow, with contemporary match reports highlighting his influence in Croatia’s midfield despite the team playing much of the second half with 10 men.
What makes Modrić’s situation even more remarkable is his longevity. Rather than simply serving as a ceremonial veteran, he has continued to be trusted in competitive matches and remains a central figure in Croatia’s midfield.
Recent reports have again indicated that Modrić is prepared to continue representing Croatia in the Nations League. Digi Sport reported that he was expected to remain involved throughout Croatia’s current Nations League campaign, with Croatia scheduled to face the Czech Republic, Spain and England.
The Croatian Football Federation’s own records underline just how extraordinary his international career has become. Modrić has accumulated more than 200 caps, 29 goals and 109 victories for his country.
For Croatia, his continued presence provides something few teams possess: a veteran midfielder with decades of elite-level experience who can still dictate the tempo of major international matches.
The bigger question now is not whether Modrić has already achieved enough. He clearly has.
It is how much longer the Croatian maestro can continue rewriting his own international record — and whether another Nations League campaign could become the next chapter of one of football’s most extraordinary careers.
