LAGUNA, Philippines — Laguna de Bay has crossed its critical high-water mark as persistent heavy rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Habagat, and a low-pressure area continue to threaten communities along the country’s largest lake.
The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) reported that the lake’s water level reached 12.58 meters at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, exceeding its critical high-water mark of 12.50 meters.
Authorities are now urging residents in lakeshore and low-lying communities to remain vigilant, prepare for possible flooding, and follow evacuation instructions should conditions worsen.
A Lake Under Pressure
The latest reading marks another alarming rise in Laguna de Bay’s water level after weeks of persistent rainfall. Earlier this month, the lake stood at around 11.30 meters before climbing to more than 12 meters within days, underscoring how quickly prolonged monsoon rains can fill the massive lake basin.
Laguna de Bay acts as a natural catch basin for waters flowing from watersheds in Laguna and Rizal, as well as parts of Metro Manila. As water continues to accumulate, communities along its shoreline face an increased risk of flooding, especially if heavy rainfall persists.
The LLDA said residents should closely monitor official advisories and be ready to evacuate when instructed by local authorities.
Why the Critical Level Matters
Crossing the 12.50-meter mark does not automatically mean every lakeshore community will flood, but it is a serious warning that the lake is carrying an exceptionally high volume of water.
The danger is particularly significant for low-lying areas, where continued rainfall and runoff could push water farther inland. Weather authorities have also warned of potentially dangerous flooding in areas experiencing intense monsoon rains.
The situation comes amid a broader spell of severe weather that has affected millions of people across several regions in recent weeks, highlighting the continuing threat posed by enhanced Habagat conditions.
