HYDERABAD, India — India is making another major push into the global artificial intelligence race, with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and its HyperVault data-center business planning to invest up to ₹700 billion ($7.4 billion) in a massive AI-focused data-center campus in Telangana.
The project, announced on September 5, is designed to reach 1 gigawatt (GW) of capacity and will be developed in phases on a 264-acre site in Hyderabad, according to Reuters and Times of India.
The scale of the project puts it among the most ambitious AI infrastructure developments announced in India, as the country attempts to position itself as a major global hub for AI computing, cloud infrastructure and next-generation digital services.
Why TCS Is Making This Massive AI Bet
The planned campus will be built specifically for the demanding computing requirements of artificial intelligence.
Unlike conventional data centers, AI facilities require extremely high-density computing infrastructure capable of handling enormous workloads involved in training and running AI models.
TCS says HyperVault’s facilities are intended to support frontier AI companies, hyperscalers, deep-tech businesses, enterprises and public-sector requirements. The infrastructure is being designed around high-density GPU deployments and AI workloads that require significant amounts of computing power.
The project will be developed at Bharat Future City in Hyderabad, reinforcing Telangana’s ambitions to establish the region as a major destination for technology and AI investment.
And that is where the story gets bigger.
The $7.4 Billion Number Doesn’t Mean $7.4 Billion Is Being Spent Overnight
The headline investment figure needs some context.
TCS and its partners are planning up to ₹700 billion ($7.4 billion) for the full-scale, 1-GW campus. The facility will be built progressively rather than all at once.
TCS has previously described HyperVault as a separately managed AI infrastructure business funded through a combination of equity and debt.
In November 2025, TCS announced a strategic partnership with private-equity firm TPG involving a commitment of up to ₹180 billion ($2 billion) for HyperVault. TPG agreed to invest as much as ₹88.2 billion, with a potential stake ranging from 27.5% to 49%.
That earlier investment is therefore part of the broader HyperVault strategy, rather than evidence that the entire ₹700 billion project cost has already been deployed.
OpenAI Is Already Part of the Bigger Picture
TCS’s AI infrastructure ambitions have also expanded through its partnership with OpenAI.
In February, TCS and OpenAI announced a multi-year partnership under which TCS’s HyperVault unit would develop 100 MW of AI infrastructure in India, with an option to scale the capacity to 1 GW.
The infrastructure is intended to support next-generation AI workloads and contribute to India’s development as an AI hub.
TCS’s FY2026 annual report also identifies the first 100-MW phase as being planned for OpenAI as an anchor customer, with the broader project capable of expanding toward 1 GW.
That makes the latest Hyderabad announcement more significant than a conventional data-center expansion: it is part of a much broader strategy to build an AI infrastructure ecosystem inside India.
Why Hyderabad?
Hyderabad has emerged as one of India’s most important technology centers, offering a combination of engineering talent, established technology companies, data-center infrastructure and a growing AI ecosystem.
TCS CEO K. Krithivasan said Hyderabad provides the scale, talent and ecosystem needed to serve global customers.
The development also fits into Telangana’s broader effort to attract large technology and infrastructure investments.
The state has increasingly positioned itself as a destination for data centers, cloud infrastructure and advanced technology projects, while Hyderabad continues to compete with Bengaluru, Mumbai and other Indian technology hubs.
India Wants to Become an AI Infrastructure Powerhouse
The TCS announcement arrives as investment in India’s data-center industry accelerates.
TCS itself said in 2025 that India’s data-center capacity was around 1.5 GW and was expected to exceed 10 GW by 2030. The company also cited industry estimates putting total investment attracted by India’s data-center sector since 2019 at nearly $94 billion.
Reuters has reported that major technology companies, including Google and Amazon, have announced plans for more than $40 billion in Indian data-center investments over the next five years, highlighting the country’s increasingly important role in the global AI infrastructure race.
India’s appeal goes beyond its huge domestic internet market.
The country has a large pool of technology workers, a rapidly expanding digital economy and an increasingly ambitious strategy around AI, semiconductors and advanced manufacturing.
TCS Is Moving Beyond Traditional IT Services
There is another important reason investors are watching HyperVault closely.
TCS has traditionally been associated with IT services, consulting and outsourcing. Building large-scale AI data-center infrastructure represents a move further into the capital-intensive physical infrastructure behind AI.
TCS reported that its annualized AI revenue had already crossed $2.3 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, underscoring the growing importance of AI to its core business.
The company has also been expanding its AI ecosystem through partnerships with major technology companies.
In its FY2026 results, TCS disclosed an agreement with AMD to co-develop rack-scale AI infrastructure and an AI-ready data-center blueprint supporting up to 200 MW of capacity.
Together, those moves suggest TCS is attempting to build a broader AI value chain — from infrastructure and cloud capabilities to AI platforms and enterprise applications.
The Bigger Question: Who Will Need All This Compute?
AI models are becoming increasingly expensive and computationally demanding to train and operate.
That means the race to develop AI is increasingly becoming a race to secure chips, electricity, cooling systems, networks and data-center capacity.
A 1-GW AI campus is therefore about much more than buildings filled with servers.
It requires massive power infrastructure, sophisticated cooling systems, high-speed networking and access to advanced computing hardware.
TCS has said HyperVault facilities are intended to incorporate technologies such as liquid cooling and high-density racks, which are increasingly important as AI workloads place heavier demands on data-center infrastructure.
India’s AI Moment Is Getting Bigger
The TCS announcement comes at a time when India’s private investment cycle is showing signs of strengthening.
Reuters reported that India’s economy grew 7.8% in the April-June 2026 quarter, while private investment and corporate capital expenditure also showed signs of acceleration. Investments in areas including AI, semiconductors and advanced infrastructure are increasingly contributing to the country’s next phase of growth.
The TCS project fits directly into that transition.
Instead of simply being a consumer and software-services market for AI, India is trying to become a place where AI infrastructure itself is built and operated.
And if the full HyperVault campus reaches its planned 1-GW capacity, the project could become one of the most significant pieces of AI infrastructure in the country.
What happens next?
The immediate focus will be on how quickly HyperVault moves from land acquisition and planning into construction and deployment.
The project is expected to be developed in phases, meaning the full 1-GW capacity will take time to materialize. Reuters reported that the Hyderabad site has already secured 264 acres and that the development will be phased.
But the strategic message is already clear:
India does not want to merely consume the AI revolution. It wants to build the infrastructure that powers it.
And with TCS now putting billions of dollars behind that ambition, the next phase of India’s AI race may be fought not only in software labs — but inside enormous data centers capable of powering the world’s most demanding AI systems.
