SEOUL — Hyundai Motor Group is preparing for a future in which its most important products may no longer have four wheels.
The South Korean automotive giant is accelerating an ambitious transformation that could eventually take it far beyond the business of manufacturing Hyundai, Kia and Genesis vehicles.
At the center of the strategy is what Hyundai calls “Physical AI” — artificial intelligence that does not merely generate text, images or software responses, but interacts with the physical world through robots, autonomous vehicles, factories and other intelligent machines.
Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung made that ambition explicit during the San Francisco AI Summit in July, saying the company was moving beyond the traditional boundaries of automobile manufacturing through robotics, autonomous driving and AI-defined factories.
Hyundai’s goal, Chung said, is to transform the group into a “Physical AI solution company.”
And its plans extend much further than factory robots.
Hyundai’s Vision Goes From Cars to Robots — and Eventually Entire Cities
Physical AI essentially gives artificial intelligence a body.
Instead of an AI system simply analyzing data on a server, Physical AI combines sensors, machines, robotics and software so that artificial intelligence can perceive its surroundings, make decisions and physically respond.
Hyundai sees several layers to that future.
The first includes intelligent machines such as autonomous vehicles and robots.
The next involves intelligent spaces, including factories where AI coordinates production, logistics, quality control and robotics.
Eventually, Hyundai envisions something even larger: interconnected urban infrastructure in which transportation, energy systems, robots and other services could potentially operate through integrated AI systems.
The company describes that long-term ambition as city-level integrated intelligence.
That may sound distant, but Hyundai is already building the pieces needed to test the idea in the real world.
Boston Dynamics Could Become Hyundai’s Most Important AI Asset
One of Hyundai’s biggest advantages in the Physical AI race is Boston Dynamics.
The robotics company is responsible for some of the world’s most recognizable advanced robots, including the four-legged Spot, warehouse-focused Stretch, and humanoid Atlas.
Hyundai acquired an 80% controlling stake in Boston Dynamics in 2021.
In July 2026, Hyundai Motor Group disclosed plans to acquire SoftBank Group’s remaining stake of roughly 10%, a deal that would effectively make Boston Dynamics wholly owned by Hyundai-related shareholders.
Reuters reported that local media estimates valued that transaction at around 500 billion won, or approximately $335 million, although Hyundai did not publicly disclose the transaction price.
The move matters because Hyundai is no longer treating Boston Dynamics simply as a futuristic robotics investment.
It wants to integrate robots directly into its manufacturing system.
And Atlas is expected to become one of the biggest tests.
Atlas Could Enter Hyundai’s Georgia Factory in 2028
Hyundai plans to begin deploying the production version of Boston Dynamics’ Atlas humanoid robot at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia beginning in 2028.
The first applications are expected to involve tasks such as parts sequencing.
By 2030, Hyundai plans to expand Atlas into additional manufacturing work, potentially including component assembly.
The company says robots would eventually take on repetitive, physically demanding and potentially hazardous tasks while human workers supervise, train and manage the systems.
The latest Atlas has been engineered specifically with industrial applications in mind.
Hyundai says the product version features 56 degrees of freedom, human-scale hands with tactile sensing and the ability to lift loads of up to 50 kilograms, or roughly 110 pounds.
Boston Dynamics and Hyundai are also designing Atlas so that tasks can be taught quickly and the robot can function for extended periods through capabilities such as autonomous battery replacement.
But Hyundai’s strategy isn’t just about building humanoid robots.
It wants to create the entire ecosystem around them.
Hyundai Wants the Factory to Become a Giant AI Training Ground
This could ultimately become Hyundai’s most important competitive advantage.
AI systems improve by consuming data.
Physical AI requires enormous amounts of real-world information showing robots and machines how factories, roads and workplaces actually operate.
Hyundai already owns something many AI startups don’t: a global industrial network capable of generating that data.
Its factories, logistics systems, vehicles and supply chains can function as real-world testing grounds.
Robots can perform tasks inside Hyundai facilities, collect operational data, feed that information back into AI models and then return to the factory with improved capabilities.
Hyundai describes this process as a data flywheel — a continuous loop connecting real-world operations with AI development.
If the system works, Hyundai could develop robotic technology inside its own factories before selling similar solutions to outside industries.
That would potentially transform the company from a buyer of automation technology into a supplier of it.
Hyundai Is Already Looking Beyond Automotive Factories
Hyundai’s robotics roadmap already identifies several industries beyond automobile manufacturing.
The company says technologies tested across its manufacturing network could eventually expand into areas including:
- logistics
- energy
- construction
- facility management
- delivery
- mobility services
Spot and Stretch already operate in commercial environments, while Hyundai expects Atlas to become increasingly important as humanoid robots become practical enough for broader industrial deployment.
Hyundai has also discussed expanding Robotics-as-a-Service, or RaaS, meaning companies could potentially use robotic systems together with ongoing software, maintenance and operational support instead of simply purchasing machines.
The strategy could create a recurring technology-services business that looks very different from selling automobiles.
NVIDIA, Google DeepMind and Waymo Are Part of Hyundai’s AI Network
Hyundai isn’t attempting to build every layer of Physical AI alone.
Its strategy increasingly depends on partnerships with some of the world’s biggest AI and autonomous-driving companies.
Hyundai Motor Group has announced plans to work with NVIDIA on a Robot Reference Platform combining the companies’ Physical AI capabilities.
Meanwhile, Boston Dynamics has entered a strategic collaboration with Google DeepMind, bringing its robotics hardware together with Google’s advanced AI models.
Hyundai also cites its relationship with autonomous-driving specialist Waymo as part of its broader AI ecosystem.
The basic strategy is becoming clearer.
Boston Dynamics provides world-class robotic bodies.
AI companies can provide increasingly sophisticated intelligence.
Hyundai provides manufacturing experience, industrial infrastructure, supply chains and enormous real-world environments where those technologies can be tested.
If those pieces come together, Hyundai could possess something extremely valuable in the Physical AI era: the ability to move advanced robots from laboratory demonstrations into mass production.
But Humanoid Robots Are Already Raising Worker Concerns
There is another side to Hyundai’s robotics push.
Automation could improve workplace safety and productivity — but workers are increasingly asking what happens to human jobs when humanoid machines become capable of performing factory tasks.
Reuters reported that Hyundai’s South Korean labor union has expressed concerns about employment security as robotics and automation expand.
The issue became especially visible in 2026 as Hyundai’s automation strategy collided with broader labor negotiations.
That tension could become one of the biggest tests for Physical AI.
Hyundai presents humanoid robots as co-workers designed to reduce hazardous and physically demanding labor.
Workers, however, may understandably judge the technology partly by whether robots supplement human jobs or eventually replace them.
That debate is unlikely to remain limited to Hyundai.
Automakers around the world are examining humanoid robotics and AI-driven manufacturing, potentially turning automobile factories into one of the first major battlegrounds over how Physical AI changes employment.
The Bigger Bet: Can Hyundai Sell Intelligence Instead of Just Cars?
For more than half a century, Hyundai’s identity has been built around automobiles.
Physical AI represents something considerably more ambitious.
If the strategy succeeds, Hyundai could eventually operate simultaneously as an automaker, robotics manufacturer, autonomous-mobility company, smart-factory provider and AI infrastructure business.
Its factories could become laboratories.
Its robots could become products.
And the massive amount of data generated by those machines could continuously improve the next generation of AI systems.
Hyundai has already said its global operations could eventually generate demand for tens of thousands of Atlas robots, while technology validated inside automotive plants could later move into other industries.
That makes Hyundai’s Physical AI push far more than another futuristic technology project.
It is a bet that the skills needed to manufacture millions of sophisticated machines reliably and at scale could become just as important in the robotics era as designing the AI itself.
The unanswered question is whether Hyundai can turn that industrial advantage into a profitable new business before rivals racing into humanoid robotics and Physical AI do the same.
Because if Hyundai’s bet works, the company known worldwide for building cars may eventually make some of its biggest money from machines that never need a driver.
