Hongqi is bringing a distinctly Chinese interpretation of luxury to Singapore with the E-HS9, a full-size electric SUV designed to compete in a market long dominated by established European luxury brands.
The arrival is significant for Hongqi because Singapore is the marque’s first right-hand-drive market globally. The move also forms part of the brand’s wider international expansion as Chinese carmakers increasingly enter premium segments outside China.
Founded in 1958, Hongqi has a long association with China’s political and state history and has traditionally been positioned as a prestigious domestic marque. In recent years, however, the brand has been developing a more internationally oriented luxury identity.
The E-HS9 is one of the clearest examples of that transformation. Measuring 5,209mm long with a 3,110mm wheelbase, the SUV has a large road presence, while its signature waterfall grille and central red flag motif connect the modern design with Hongqi’s heritage.
Inside, the E-HS9 is configured as a six-seater, with the emphasis firmly on passenger comfort. Depending on the specification, features include premium leather, Alcantara, wood trim, ambient lighting, ventilated seats and massage functions for the front occupants.
The second row also receives ventilated seats, while a panoramic sunroof and acoustic glass are designed to make the cabin quieter and more spacious.
Technology is another major part of the package. The Singapore model features dual 15.6-inch displays, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 16-speaker Bose sound system.
Underneath, the E-HS9 uses dual electric motors and all-wheel drive. Hongqi Singapore lists up to 492bhp, a 120kWh battery and a claimed WLTP range of up to 570km. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in about 5.5 seconds.
Its air suspension is also designed with luxury in mind. The system incorporates Continuous Damping Control and can adjust ride height by as much as 105mm, while driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot detection and lane-keep assist.
But the biggest surprise for Singapore buyers may be the price.
Current listings put the E-HS9 at about S$498,888, including Singapore’s exceptionally high vehicle taxes and Certificate of Entitlement costs. The listed figure is therefore not directly comparable with overseas sticker prices for the same vehicle.
Hongqi’s entry also arrives as Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturers increasingly move beyond the mass-market segment and attempt to establish themselves in the premium market.
The E-HS9 is therefore more than another electric SUV entering Singapore. It represents Hongqi’s attempt to translate more than six decades of Chinese automotive heritage into a modern luxury product — and to convince Singapore buyers that premium motoring does not have to come from the traditional European names.
The bigger question is whether Hongqi’s combination of size, technology, electric performance and Chinese luxury identity can persuade Singapore’s premium-car buyers to look beyond the brands they already know.
