MANILA, Philippines — Before his name became synonymous with towering heels, beauty queens, and some of the biggest stages in international pageantry, Jojo Bragais was pursuing an entirely different dream: becoming a doctor.
Today, the Filipino designer is known as the “Beauty Queens’ Shoemaker,” with his creations worn by some of the Philippines’ most celebrated pageant winners. But behind the glamorous footwear and international recognition is a deeply personal story of hardship, reinvention, and finding purpose in the most unexpected place.
In a recent PEP.ph feature, Bragais opened up about the difficult chapter in his life that eventually led him to shoemaking. A licensed nurse and midwife with no formal training in the craft, he found himself searching for a new direction before taking a chance on an old shoe factory in Rizal—a decision that would ultimately change his life.
A Life-Changing Discovery
Bragais did not grow up dreaming of becoming a shoe designer. He said his original ambition was to enter medicine, particularly pediatrics. But life took an unexpected turn, and during a deeply challenging period, he began searching for a reason to move forward.
His eventual discovery of shoemaking gave him something more than a livelihood—it gave him a sense of purpose.
One of the defining moments of his early career came when he accepted a custom order for a young client with high-arched feet after other shoemakers had reportedly declined the challenge. When the shoes fit successfully, the emotional response from the client’s family became a turning point for Bragais.
That experience, he told PEP.ph, helped convince him that his work could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
The Science Behind the Signature Heels
Bragais’ background in nursing and midwifery may seem worlds apart from fashion, but he has credited his understanding of anatomy and physiology with helping inform his approach to footwear design.
According to his account, details such as balance, foot positioning, heel inclination, and comfort are central to his work—especially for pageant contestants who spend long hours walking, posing, and performing in high heels. He learned the traditional craft from experienced shoemakers while applying knowledge from his previous medical education to product development.
That combination of craftsmanship and comfort would eventually help his name travel far beyond the Philippines.
The Moment Pageantry Came Calling
Bragais’ breakthrough into the national pageant scene began through his friendship with beauty queen Yvette Marie Santiago, whom he supported by providing footwear during her pageant journey.
The exposure eventually led to an opportunity with the Binibining Pilipinas organization, helping establish Bragais as a familiar name in Philippine pageantry. Over the years, his shoes have been associated with major beauty queens, including Pia Wurtzbach, Megan Young, and Catriona Gray, according to the recent PEP.ph profile.
His influence has since expanded internationally. GMA News previously reported that Bragais had served as an official shoe designer for multiple major competitions and had been associated with editions of the Miss Universe pageant.
From Designing Shoes to Helping Shape Pageantry
In 2026, Bragais’ role in the industry has grown beyond footwear.
He served as a judge at the inaugural Miss Grand International All Stars competition in Bangkok, joining an international selection panel—a milestone that reflected his growing influence within the global pageant community.
More recently, he also stepped into a leadership role with the launch of Reina Filipinas, a new Philippine pageant organization where he serves as president. The organization was officially unveiled in June 2026, with Miss Grand International 2025 Emma Tiglao named national director.
The move signals a new chapter for Bragais: from creating the shoes contestants walk in to helping build the platforms where future queens may begin their journeys.
A Filipino Brand With Global Ambitions
Despite his growing international profile, Bragais’ long-term vision remains rooted in building a Filipino brand that can compete on the world stage.
His official brand history traces the company’s beginnings to a small, made-to-order operation before its rapid rise through pageantry and international exposure. The brand now offers a wider range of footwear for different customers while maintaining its strong connection to pageant culture.
For Jojo Bragais, however, the story is bigger than fashion.
It is a reminder that life’s biggest detours can sometimes lead to an entirely new destination—and that one unexpected opportunity can become the first step toward a dream no one saw coming.
From a medical career to a shoe factory, from local pageants to the international stage, Jojo Bragais has proven that sometimes the road to finding your purpose begins with simply taking the next step.
