Former India T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has opened up about the shock and disappointment of being dropped from the national side just months after leading India to a historic T20 World Cup title.
Suryakumar Yadav has admitted he was left questioning India’s decision to move on from him after one of the most successful captaincy spells in the country’s T20 history.
The 35-year-old led India to a successful defence of the men’s T20 World Cup title in 2026, making India the first team to retain the trophy. Yet, despite that historic achievement, Suryakumar was subsequently omitted from India’s T20 plans and replaced as captain by Shreyas Iyer.
Speaking about the decision, the former skipper made no attempt to hide his disappointment.
The numbers make the change even more striking. During his tenure, Suryakumar guided India to 42 victories in 50 completed T20 internationals, a remarkable record that underlined the team’s consistency during his leadership. His final appearance came in India’s World Cup triumph over New Zealand.
But success as captain did not guarantee security.
Reports across Indian cricket media indicate that selectors were also weighing Suryakumar’s individual form. While India enjoyed a successful World Cup campaign, his batting returns were comparatively modest, and he later endured a difficult IPL season with Mumbai Indians, scoring 270 runs in 13 innings. Still, for Suryakumar, the timing was difficult to understand.

Suryakumar has, however, acknowledged the quality of his successor and stopped short of attacking the selectors. His focus now appears to be on rediscovering his best form and earning another opportunity in Indian colours.
The debate surrounding his omission has only intensified because of what came before it: a World Cup-winning captaincy, a dominant overall record and a historic achievement for Indian cricket.
For now, the question remains unanswered: Was India simply looking toward the future—or did one of the country’s most successful T20 captains pay the ultimate price for a dip in personal form?
