Greenland may seem like a world away from the Philippines. But scientists are warning that the dramatic changes unfolding across the Arctic’s vast frozen landscape could carry consequences far beyond the North Pole—including for some of the world’s most vulnerable coastal communities.
As Greenland’s ice sheet continues to lose mass, the effects are becoming a global concern, with rising seas, shifting weather patterns and an increasingly intense geopolitical battle over the Arctic’s future all converging on the world’s largest island.
A recent in-depth report by Channel NewsAsia paints Greenland as a place caught at the center of two powerful forces: a rapidly warming planet and a growing global competition for strategic influence and natural resources.
The Ice Is Melting—and the Numbers Are Alarming
NASA satellite observations show that Greenland lost an average of approximately 264 billion tonnes of ice every year between 2002 and 2025, contributing about 0.8 millimeters annually to global sea-level rise.
That may sound small. But sea-level rise is not simply about watching water slowly creep up a beach.
Even modest increases can make coastal flooding more frequent and destructive, threaten infrastructure, contaminate freshwater supplies with saltwater and increase pressure on communities already living on the front lines of extreme weather.
Greenland’s ice sheet is particularly important because of its enormous size. It covers more than 80 percent of the island, and its continued melting is one of the major contributors to rising global sea levels. NASA’s long-term satellite record confirms that the loss of Greenland’s land ice has continued to be a major climate indicator.
Why Should Filipinos Care?
The Philippines is an archipelago with thousands of kilometers of coastline and millions of people living in low-lying and coastal areas.
According to the CNA report, Asia is home to a large share of the world’s population exposed to the combined threats of sea-level rise and land subsidence. Scientists interviewed by CNA stressed a simple but urgent message: Greenland’s melting ice is connected to coastlines around the world.
For countries like the Philippines, the concern is not that Greenland’s melting ice will suddenly flood cities tomorrow. The danger is more gradual—and potentially more difficult to manage: higher baseline sea levels can worsen the impact of storm surges, high tides and coastal flooding over time.
Gradual does not mean harmless.
That may be the most important lesson from Greenland’s disappearing ice.
But Climate Change Is Only Half the Story
As the Arctic warms and ice retreats, Greenland is also becoming a geopolitical prize.
The United States, China and other major powers are watching the Arctic more closely as changing conditions create new strategic calculations involving shipping routes, military access and critical minerals.

Less ice can mean greater access—but it can also bring greater competition.
A New Arctic Race Is Taking Shape
Greenland holds significant potential reserves of minerals considered important for modern technology and the global energy transition, including rare earth elements, graphite and lithium.
But extracting those resources is far from simple.
The Arctic remains one of the harshest and most unpredictable environments on Earth. Melting ice does not mean the region has suddenly become easy—or safe—to navigate and develop. Scientists and Arctic experts have warned that a warmer region can also bring new hazards, infrastructure challenges and environmental risks.
That reality is increasingly colliding with political ambition.
Who gets access to Greenland’s resources? Who controls strategic Arctic routes? And how much influence should foreign powers have over a territory whose people have their own political identity and future?
Those questions are becoming harder to separate from the climate crisis itself.
