KYIV — US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have held their first talks in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, just one day after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The high-stakes visit marks a significant new stage in Washington’s effort to revive negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy released a video showing the meeting in central Kyiv and said simply: “Talks have begun.”

For Witkoff and Kushner, the trip was especially notable. Although both men had visited Moscow multiple times, this was their first visit to Kyiv for direct talks with Ukraine’s leadership.

From Putin’s Kremlin to Zelenskyy’s Kyiv

The US envoys arrived in Kyiv after holding talks with Putin in Moscow on Saturday.

According to the White House, Witkoff and Kushner met the Russian president as part of US President Donald Trump’s efforts to advance a possible path toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

Moscow Says It Still Expects to Achieve Its Military Goals

Russia and Ukraine agreed not to strike each other’s capitals for three days around the visit by the US envoys, according to the Taipei Times report.

Before the meeting, Putin also said Russia would work to ensure the safety of the American envoys during their visit to Ukraine.

“We will do everything that depends on us to ensure the safety of the negotiation process and mediators such as yourselves,” Putin said.

He also thanked Trump for continuing to pursue efforts to end the war despite the difficulties involved.

Why Jared Kushner’s Role Is Drawing Attention

Kushner’s participation has added another high-profile figure to Trump’s diplomatic push.

As Trump’s son-in-law and a former senior White House adviser, Kushner has previously played a role in major diplomatic initiatives.

His presence alongside Witkoff signals the importance Washington is placing on the latest effort to break the deadlock.

The two envoys are now acting as a direct channel between Moscow and Kyiv, carrying messages and proposals between the two sides.
