TOKYO, Japan — Four Japanese scientists have been named winners of the prestigious 2026 Lasker Awards, earning international recognition for groundbreaking discoveries that transformed the understanding of sleep and led to a major advance in the treatment of hemophilia A.
The announcement marks a major moment for Japanese medical science, with University of Tsukuba professor Masashi Yanagisawa honored for his pioneering work on orexin, while three researchers associated with Chugai Pharmaceutical received the clinical research award for developing a revolutionary treatment for hemophilia A.
The Lasker Awards, among the world’s most respected honors in medical research, are often described as a major indicator of scientific achievements with Nobel Prize-level significance.
Sleep Science Breakthrough Earns Masashi Yanagisawa Top Honor
Yanagisawa shared the 2026 Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award with Stanford University School of Medicine scientist Emmanuel Mignot for discoveries that reshaped scientific understanding of sleep, wakefulness and narcolepsy.
The two researchers were honored for identifying the role of orexin, also known as hypocretin, a brain peptide that helps maintain wakefulness, and for establishing that a deficiency in orexin signaling causes type 1 narcolepsy.
Yanagisawa’s research helped uncover one of the brain’s most important systems for regulating whether humans and animals remain awake or unexpectedly fall asleep.
The discovery opened an entirely new field of sleep research and has already contributed to the development of medicines targeting the orexin system.
According to the Lasker Foundation, several drugs that block orexin receptors have already been approved for treating insomnia, while treatments designed to activate orexin signaling for narcolepsy are advancing through development.
Yanagisawa said the recognition was deeply encouraging for the future of sleep science, a field that historically received less attention than many other areas of biomedical research.
Three Japanese Researchers Honored for Hemophilia A Breakthrough
The 2026 Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award went to three scientists connected with Chugai Pharmaceutical: Kunihiro Hattori, Takehisa Kitazawa and Tomoyuki Igawa.
They were recognized for inventing a groundbreaking bispecific antibody that helps restore a critical blood-clotting function missing in people with hemophilia A.
Their breakthrough led to the development of Hemlibra, also known as emicizumab, a treatment designed to mimic the activity of clotting factor VIII.
Hemophilia A is a genetic bleeding disorder in which patients have insufficient or defective factor VIII, making it difficult for blood to clot normally.
The Lasker Foundation said the researchers’ antibody technology joins clotting Factors IX and X, effectively compensating for the missing factor VIII activity and helping prevent dangerous bleeding episodes.
The innovation represented a major shift from older treatment strategies that relied heavily on replacing the missing clotting factor.
According to the foundation, Hemlibra became the first bispecific IgG antibody approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for therapeutic use in 2017 and has since been approved in more than 120 countries.
A Major Milestone for Japanese Science
Japanese media reported that this is the first time in 12 years that Japanese scientists have received the prestigious Lasker Award, following the recognition of Kazutoshi Mori in 2014.

The award is frequently called a gateway to the Nobel Prize because a significant number of Lasker laureates have later gone on to receive Nobel honors.
However, winning a Lasker Award does not guarantee a Nobel Prize.
