BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — A 19-year-old former criminology student was arrested in a police buy-bust operation in Bacolod City after authorities said they recovered about 52 grams of suspected shabu worth ₱353,600, raising fresh concerns over the continued movement of illegal drugs in the city.
The suspect, identified by police only as alias “Tata,” was arrested on August 19, 2026, along San Juan Street in Purok San Sebastian, Barangay Sum-ag. He is a resident of Barangay 1, according to the Bacolod City Police Office.
Informant Tip Led Police to Suspect
Police Station 9 said the operation began after a confidential informant reported the suspect’s alleged involvement in illegal drug transactions.
Investigators subsequently conducted casing and surveillance to verify the information. Police claimed the suspect allegedly handled roughly 25 to 50 grams of illegal drugs per transaction and used GCash for payments.
After authorities arranged a controlled transaction with the assistance of the informant, officers moved in and arrested the suspect.
Police reported recovering one sachet containing suspected shabu that served as the buy-bust item, eight additional sachets, one knot-tied plastic packet, a black sling bag and ₱1,000 in buy-bust money. The suspected drugs had a combined estimated weight of approximately 52 grams.
The substances remain described as suspected shabu in the reports surrounding the operation; their final evidentiary status is subject to the required forensic and judicial processes.
Suspect Classified as High-Value Individual
A separate report by Digicast Negros, citing police information, said authorities classified the 19-year-old suspect as a High-Value Individual or HVI. It likewise reported that the operation followed intelligence gathering by Police Station 9.
The suspect remains in police custody while authorities prepare charges for alleged violations of Republic Act No. 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region director Brig. Gen. Romano Cardiño said authorities would continue intelligence-driven operations targeting the illegal drug trade.
Bacolod Has Seen Several Major Drug Operations in 2026
The Sum-ag operation comes amid a series of significant anti-drug seizures recorded in Bacolod this year.
On May 19, police reported confiscating about 4.2 kilograms of shabu valued at ₱28.56 million from a woman during a buy-bust operation in Barangay 31.
Later, on May 31, another 19-year-old suspect was arrested after police said they recovered approximately 320 grams of shabu worth ₱2.176 million in Barangay 2.
On July 3 and 4, separate operations resulted in three arrests and the seizure of about ₱11.9 million worth of shabu, according to the Philippine News Agency.
And on July 5, Bacolod police reported arresting an alleged drug runner carrying approximately 2.075 kilograms of shabu valued at ₱14.11 million.
Those cases are separate from the latest arrest and do not by themselves establish any connection between the suspects. Taken together, however, the seizures show that authorities continue to confront both small-scale distribution and substantially larger drug movements within Bacolod City.
Authorities Face a Bigger Question
The arrest of a former criminology student adds an unusual dimension to the latest case, but the more important issue for investigators may be what lies beyond one suspect.
If police allegations that the accused was regularly handling tens of grams of suspected shabu are substantiated, investigators could turn their attention to the drug’s source, distribution network and possible financiers.
For Bacolod residents, the ₱353,600 seizure may therefore represent more than another entry in the city’s anti-drug statistics.
The bigger question is whether the arrest leads authorities further up the supply chain — or whether another distributor simply takes the suspect’s place.
