Paris Saint-Germain finally have their first Ligue 1 victory of the new season — and once again, Ferran Torres was the man who made the difference.
The Spanish World Cup winner continued his sensational start to life at PSG, scoring the only goal in a tense 1-0 victory over Stade Brestois on September 13. The result ended PSG’s frustrating three-match wait for a league win and gave the reigning French champions a much-needed boost after a surprisingly slow start to their title defence.
Torres struck just five minutes into the match after a slick attacking move involving João Neves and Ousmane Dembélé. After collecting a loose ball, Torres helped start the move before Dembélé’s clever backheel found him in space. The Spaniard then calmly curled a low shot into the corner.
It was another clinical moment from a player who has quickly become one of PSG’s biggest attacking weapons.
According to Reuters, Torres has now scored six goals in five appearances since joining the European champions. His remarkable run comes after he also scored the winning goal for Spain in the World Cup final against Argentina earlier this year.
PSG Finally Break Their Ligue 1 Winless Run
Before travelling to Brest, PSG had collected only two points from their opening three Ligue 1 matches — a sluggish start that was unexpected for a team widely tipped to dominate French football again this season.
The pressure had been building after PSG opened their campaign with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Rennes. In that match, Torres announced himself in spectacular fashion by coming off the bench and scoring twice to rescue a point after PSG had fallen 2-0 behind.
His latest goal against Brest proved equally important.
But despite taking an early lead, PSG were far from comfortable.
Brest pushed hard for an equaliser and came close on several occasions. Reuters reported that Kamory Doumbia hit the post and later forced PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov into an important save as the home side threatened to turn the match around.
The Parisian side ultimately held firm to secure a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory.
Ferran Torres Is Quickly Becoming PSG’s New Goal Machine
Torres’ impact since arriving in Paris has been nothing short of explosive.
His Ligue 1 debut against Rennes produced two goals in just 37 minutes after he entered the match at halftime. French and Spanish media quickly highlighted the significance of his immediate impact, with reports noting that his debut placed him alongside some of PSG’s most memorable attacking arrivals.
His form has also carried into Europe.
Just days before the Brest match, Torres scored a hat-trick as PSG opened their Champions League title defence with a commanding 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava.
That means the Spanish forward has rapidly transformed from an exciting new signing into one of the most productive players in Luis Enrique’s squad.
His growing partnership with Ousmane Dembélé could also become a major storyline for PSG this season. Dembélé provided the crucial backheel in the build-up to Torres’ winner against Brest, while PSG’s attacking depth continues to give Luis Enrique multiple options across domestic and European competitions.
A Warning for PSG’s Rivals — But Problems Remain
The victory will bring relief to PSG, but the performance also showed that the defending champions are not yet completely comfortable.
Brest created enough opportunities to make PSG sweat, and the narrow scoreline highlighted the work still needed if Luis Enrique’s side are to dominate Ligue 1 as they have in previous seasons.
PSG entered the season as overwhelming favourites to win another French title and had already shown their European strength with their emphatic Champions League victory.
However, the slow league start proved that domestic success will not simply be handed to them.
Elsewhere in Ligue 1, Lille moved to the top of the standings after beating Troyes 2-0, while Lens came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Le Mans. Those results underline the competitive start to the season, with several clubs looking to take advantage whenever PSG show signs of vulnerability.
For now, though, PSG have finally broken through.
And the biggest reason is becoming increasingly obvious.
