FIJI — Canadian surfing sensation Erin Brooks has sent an early warning to the rest of the World Surf League field after delivering a perfect 10-point ride in a breathtaking opening performance at the 2026 Fiji Pro.
The 19-year-old carved her way into the spotlight at the legendary Cloudbreak, threading a long and powerful barrel on one of the biggest waves of the day. Brooks combined the perfect score with an earlier eight-point ride for a remarkable 18.00 out of 20, the highest two-wave heat total recorded on the opening day.
“That was definitely the best heat of my life,” Brooks said after emerging from the wave in disbelief.
Her performance wasn’t just another heat win—it was a statement.
From Tahiti Triumph to Fiji Perfection
Brooks arrived in Fiji with momentum already behind her. Earlier this month, she captured the Tahiti Pro, staging an impressive comeback victory that helped restore her confidence after a difficult start to the 2026 season. Her latest performance at Cloudbreak now raises an intriguing question: Is Erin Brooks hitting her peak at exactly the right time?
The Canadian teenager is no stranger to success in Fiji. In 2024, she won the event as a 17-year-old wildcard, making Cloudbreak a venue where she has already proven she can thrive under pressure.
Against Australia’s Sophie McCulloch, however, Brooks took things to another level. McCulloch managed a two-wave total of just 3.06, while Brooks produced the kind of dominant performance that immediately placed her among the strongest contenders for the title.
A Wave That Could Define the Event
Surfing publication Surfer described Brooks’ opening-day performance as one of the standout moments of the women’s Championship Tour season, noting the challenging six-to-eight-foot conditions and the depth and length of her barrel ride. The performance reinforced what many observers are beginning to believe: Brooks could be the surfer to beat in Fiji.
Cloudbreak is widely regarded as one of professional surfing’s most demanding reef breaks, where timing, commitment and composure can make the difference between a career-defining ride and a punishing wipeout.
Brooks showed all three.
And after racing through multiple sections inside the barrel, she emerged safely—seemingly stunned by what she had just accomplished.
Other Surfers Make Their Move
Brooks wasn’t the only athlete to shine as the Fiji Pro got underway.
Tahiti’s Vahine Fierro advanced after posting a 14.17 two-wave total against California’s Alyssa Spencer, while Portuguese rookie Francisca Veselko held on for a tense victory over Australia’s two-time world champion Tyler Wright.
On the men’s side, Brazil’s Yago Dora opened strongly, while California’s Cole Houshmand produced a 15.17 heat total to eliminate Australia’s Ethan Ewing.
But on a day filled with deep barrels and big scores, it was Brooks who delivered the moment everyone will be talking about.
