Das DD Returns Restaurant Buzzer After Two Months, Jokes With Staff in Mandarin

Singapore entertainer and host Das DD has amused social media users after returning a restaurant buzzer that he accidentally took home two months ago.

The 36-year-old, whose real name is Dharmadasa D Dharamahsena, shared a video on Instagram showing himself returning the device to what appeared to be an Old Chang Kee outlet.

Das DD explained to a staff member in Mandarin that he had accidentally taken the buzzer during his previous visit. When asked when that happened, he sheepishly admitted that it had been about two months earlier.

He then joked with the staff member, asking her not to take photos because he had already returned the buzzer.

The staff asked whether he could hear the buzzer whenever it was activated.

Das DD replied that he could not, joking that he lived in Woodlands and was too far away.

He also said he had thought about returning the buzzer several times but had not found the opportunity to visit the outlet again.

The exchange ended with the staff member joking that she had thought he had taken the buzzer home to play with it, prompting Das DD to laugh before thanking her and leaving.

Known for his fluency in English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil, Das DD has previously attracted attention for his multilingual comedy and entertainment work.

He became the first Indian performer to win a Star Award in a performance-based category in 2023, when he received the award for hosting Mediacorp’s online programme #JustSwipeLah.

His Mandarin skills have also featured prominently in his entertainment career. He previously gained widespread attention for a parody of former prime minister Lee Hsien Loong’s 2020 circuit breaker announcement, switching between Singapore’s four official languages.

Das DD has said he picked up Mandarin from Chinese-speaking friends during kindergarten and later continued studying the language at school.

The latest incident has given fans another light-hearted glimpse of his ability to switch effortlessly into Mandarin while turning an everyday mishap into a humorous exchange.
