SINGAPORE — Singapore Changi Airport is set to become a key stop on a major new international air route linking Southeast Asia, North Africa and Australia, with EgyptAir planning to launch flights connecting Cairo, Singapore and Sydney from 2027.
The proposed service would give travellers a new connection between Singapore and Egypt while extending EgyptAir’s network to Australia, where the airline is set to make a major return after more than two decades.
The route, announced at the El Alamein Air Show in Egypt, remains subject to regulatory approvals. Flight schedules, frequencies, aircraft details and ticket sales have yet to be announced.
A New Air Bridge Between Three Regions
The planned Cairo-Singapore-Sydney service would strengthen connectivity between Southeast Asia, Africa and Australia.
For passengers travelling through Changi, the new route could offer easier access to Cairo and EgyptAir’s wider network across Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
Sydney Airport said Egypt is currently its largest unserved African market, while the arrival of EgyptAir would bring the number of airlines operating at Sydney Airport to a record 54 carriers.
EgyptAir chairman and CEO Captain Ahmed Adel said the proposed route would support growing demand for tourism, business, education and travel between family and friends across the three regions.
EgyptAir Eyes Return to Australia After 25 Years
The Sydney route would mark EgyptAir’s return to Australia roughly 25 years after the airline suspended its previous Cairo-Singapore-Sydney service in 2002.
Industry publication Aviation Week reported that EgyptAir previously operated the route twice weekly before ending the service in July 2002.
The airline is now looking to make a comeback with a new generation of long-haul aircraft as part of a wider international expansion strategy.
Singapore Could Regain a Direct Link to Cairo
One of the biggest potential developments for Changi passengers is the restoration of a direct Cairo-Singapore connection.
Aviation Week reported that the planned service could restore a nonstop air link between Cairo and Singapore, strengthening Changi’s position as a major connecting hub between Asia and other regions.
EgyptAir is understood to be considering its Airbus A350-900 for the route, although the airline and airports have not yet officially confirmed the aircraft type or final operating schedule.
Why Changi Is a Key Part of the Plan
Singapore’s location makes Changi an important gateway between Asia and Australia.
The airport already serves as one of the world’s biggest transit hubs, connecting passengers between Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific.
Adding another long-haul route through Singapore could give EgyptAir access to passengers travelling between multiple markets rather than relying solely on Cairo-Sydney traffic.
Industry data cited by Aviation Week showed passenger traffic between Cairo and Singapore rose sharply in 2025, while demand between Cairo and Australia also continued to grow.
The new route could therefore give EgyptAir several potential passenger markets on a single service: Cairo-Singapore, Singapore-Sydney and Cairo-Sydney.
A Boost for Singapore’s Growing Aviation Network
The proposed EgyptAir service comes as Singapore continues investing heavily in its aviation infrastructure and global connectivity.
Singapore’s Civil Aviation Authority previously announced plans for S$3 billion in investment at Changi Airport’s existing terminals to improve systems, passenger services and capacity before Terminal 5 becomes operational in the mid-2030s.
The new Cairo-Sydney service would add to the growing competition for international passengers travelling through Singapore.
Singapore Airlines is also expanding its Australian network and will begin daily flights to Western Sydney International Airport in November 2026, taking its total Sydney services to five daily flights when combined with operations at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

For Singapore travellers, a Cairo connection could open another option for visiting one of the world’s most historic destinations.
Cairo is a gateway to Egypt’s famous landmarks, including the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, while EgyptAir’s network provides onward connections across Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
