BLACKPINK’s ROSÉ Drops ‘new trick’ as She Turns Heartbreak Into High-Energy Pop-Rock

SEOUL — BLACKPINK’s ROSÉ is back in the solo spotlight with “new trick,” a high-energy new single that trades much of the melancholy of her rosie era for a brighter, more playful and rebellious sound.

Released on September 18 in South Korea, “new trick” marks ROSÉ’s latest solo release following her 2024 debut studio album rosie. The track was released alongside a music video created in partnership with Apple as part of its global “Shot on iPhone” campaign.

The song leans into garage-punk energy, combining distorted electric guitars, punchy rhythms and ROSÉ’s distinctive vocals. Its message centers on moving forward after emotional setbacks rather than remaining trapped by them.

ROSÉ Leaves the Sad Songs Behind

“new trick” signals a noticeable tonal change from much of rosie, the album that established ROSÉ as a major solo act outside BLACKPINK.

In an interview with Vogue, ROSÉ said the song was written shortly after the 2026 Met Gala while working with songwriter Amy Allen, a frequent collaborator who also co-wrote “APT.,” ROSÉ’s global hit with Bruno Mars.

ROSÉ explained that she had been surprised to realize she was no longer drawn toward writing sad songs after spending so much time in that emotional space during the making of rosie.

The result is a song built around resilience, confidence and a more carefree attitude.

Rather than dwelling on heartbreak, “new trick” turns emotional recovery into forward momentum — a theme that The Black Label described as overcoming life’s wounds and the difficulties of love in one’s own way.

A Major Apple Collaboration

The song’s arrival also comes with an unusually high-profile visual partnership.

Apple incorporated “new trick” into its latest Shot on iPhone campaign, with the entire music video filmed using the newly launched iPhone 18 Pro.

The video was directed by Dave Meyers, the acclaimed filmmaker who has worked with major artists including Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande and Harry Styles. Meyers also directed BLACKPINK’s “JUMP” music video.

The collaboration gives the single a second layer of global visibility, connecting ROSÉ’s new music with Apple’s major smartphone launch.

Amy Allen and Andrew Wells Return to ROSÉ’s Creative Circle

“new trick” was co-produced by Amy Allen and Andrew Wells.

Allen previously collaborated with ROSÉ on “APT.,” while Wells worked with her on “Stay a Little Longer.” Their involvement gives the new track a creative link to ROSÉ’s recent solo work while pushing her toward a more guitar-driven sound.

The track’s garage-punk influence also separates it from the softer and more introspective material that dominated parts of rosie.

From ‘APT.’ to a New Chapter

ROSÉ enters this new era with considerable global momentum behind her.

Her collaboration with Bruno Mars, “APT.”, became a major international hit and helped establish her as one of K-pop’s most commercially successful solo performers. The song reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, while rosie further expanded her profile as a solo artist.

“new trick,” however, does not attempt to simply recreate that formula.

Instead, ROSÉ is presenting a different side of her musical identity — one that is more energetic, playful and rooted in pop-rock.

A Preview of ROSÉ’s Next Musical Era

The single is also being positioned as a standalone release ahead of ROSÉ’s next full-length project.

According to Vogue, ROSÉ is working toward a second solo album expected in 2027, although its title and exact release date have not yet been announced. She has said she is still exploring the sound and identity she wants for the next stage of her music.

That makes “new trick” more than just another post-rosie release.

It offers an early glimpse at where ROSÉ’s solo career could be heading: less introspective, more experimental and increasingly comfortable with pop-rock influences.

BLACKPINK’s Solo Stars Continue to Expand

ROSÉ’s release also arrives during a particularly active period for BLACKPINK’s members as individual artists.

JENNIE, LISA and JISOO have each pursued solo projects, while BLACKPINK continues its activities as a group.

For ROSÉ, “new trick” represents another step in establishing a musical identity that can stand independently while still carrying the global reach associated with BLACKPINK.

And with a 2027 solo album in development, the new single could ultimately prove to be the first major signal of a much larger musical transition.
