Banlung Tubtimdang Chases Asian Games Glory in Aichi-Nagoya

Thailand’s Banlung Tubtimdang will return to the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya as one of the country’s leading hopes for a taekwondo gold medal.

The 23-year-old will compete in the men’s under-63kg division on Oct 1, hoping to build on the gold medal he won at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023.

Banlung arrives in Japan with greater expectations than he faced at his first Asian Games. He has since established himself on the international stage and won the world championship title in the under-63kg category.

His development has turned him from an emerging contender into one of Thailand’s key athletes in taekwondo.

The road to Aichi-Nagoya has not been straightforward, however. Thailand’s taekwondo team has been affected by injuries and withdrawals, leaving Banlung carrying much of the attention surrounding the squad.

His previous Asian Games triumph provided an important breakthrough. In Hangzhou, he defeated Uzbekistan’s Ulugbek Rashitov to claim the men’s under-63kg title and establish himself as one of the sport’s rising names.

Since then, the Thai fighter has continued to gain experience against the world’s leading competitors. His world title has added another major achievement to his record and increased expectations ahead of the continental competition.

Banlung has also spoken about the importance of managing pressure. Having already won at the Asian Games, he will enter the competition with the experience of knowing what it takes to perform on the continental stage.

The Aichi-Nagoya Games will be held from Sept 19 to Oct 4, with taekwondo competition taking place at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium.

Thailand is sending a large delegation to the Games, with athletes competing across dozens of sports. The country will be looking to its established champions as well as younger competitors to challenge for medals.

For Banlung, the competition represents an opportunity to defend his Asian Games title while demonstrating how far he has progressed since his breakthrough in Hangzhou.

With a world championship behind him and another Asian Games title within reach, Banlung will enter the Aichi-Nagoya tournament with both experience and expectations as he looks to add another major achievement to his growing career.
