NEGROS OCCIDENTAL — Art Arbole finally broke through on the Philippine Golf Tour, surviving a disastrous hole and a tense final stretch to capture the ICTSI Negros Occidental Classic at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club on Thursday.
Fourteen years after turning professional, Arbole delivered when it mattered most, closing with a 2-under-par 70 to finish at 10-under 270 and secure his first PGT championship by one stroke.
The victory was anything but straightforward.
Arbole appeared to lose control early in the final round after driving out of bounds on the fourth hole and making a seven. The costly mistake turned his one-shot advantage into a two-shot deficit, and another bogey on No. 8 left him three strokes behind.
Instead of allowing the setback to derail him, Arbole responded with a series of crucial birdies. He gained strokes on Nos. 9, 10, 12 and 14 to rebuild his lead and put himself back in position to win.
The biggest test came on the 18th.
After pulling his drive on the par-5 closing hole, Arbole reached the green in four and faced a lengthy 21-foot par putt. He calmly sank it to preserve a one-stroke advantage and seal the championship.
Jeffren Lumbo mounted a late challenge with a 5-under 67 to finish second at 271, while Jhonnel Ababa closed with a 71 for third at 272. Zanieboy Gialon finished fourth at 273, followed by defending champion Rupert Zaragosa at 275.
The championship marked a dramatic turnaround for Arbole, whose professional career began in 2012. Before this week, his best PGT result had been a top-five finish at the 2024 Lakewood Championship.
His breakthrough also came just days before his 36th birthday, making the victory an especially memorable milestone after more than a decade of chasing his first Tour title.
Arbole had entered the final round with a one-shot lead over Ababa after shooting 65, 67 and 68 in the first three rounds. His 10-under 200 total after 54 holes put him in position for a long-awaited breakthrough, but the final round proved to be a test of resilience as much as golf.
In the end, Arbole held his nerve at Marapara and finally joined the Philippine Golf Tour’s winners’ circle.
After 14 years of waiting, one final par was all that stood between him and the title — and this time, he made it count.
