MANILA — An active-duty Philippine Army soldier and three other men have been arrested in connection with a robbery at a convenience store in Trece Martires, Cavite, with authorities also recovering firearms, ammunition and explosives from the group.
The suspects were identified as Corporal Michael Jude Villanueva Iglufas of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division, Christian Magsumbol Delacion, Michael Angelo Alvaro Catindig and Alberto Bautista. They were arrested at a motel in Barangay 8, Catanauan, Quezon, at about 3:40 a.m., several hours after the reported robbery.
The incident involved a Dali convenience store in Trece Martires. Authorities subsequently tracked the suspects to Quezon, where they were taken into custody.
During the operation, authorities recovered an M16 rifle, two .45-caliber pistols and a .30-caliber revolver, along with assorted magazines and ammunition. Two rifle grenades and two M203 grenade rounds were also recovered.
A Nissan Terrano was likewise seized and was allegedly used as the group’s getaway vehicle.
The recovered weapons and explosives have added separate legal issues to the robbery investigation. Authorities are preparing charges under Republic Act 10591, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, and Republic Act 9516, which covers illegal possession of explosives.
The arrest of an active-duty soldier also puts additional scrutiny on the case because of the suspect’s military affiliation. However, the arrest and allegations do not by themselves establish guilt, which will ultimately be determined through the appropriate legal proceedings.
Investigators are expected to establish the individual roles of the four suspects, determine how the firearms and explosives came into their possession and gather evidence linking them to the reported robbery.
The case now moves beyond the arrests, with authorities facing the task of building the robbery case while separately pursuing the alleged firearms and explosives violations.
