SINGAPORE — Travellers heading to Woodlands Checkpoint faced delays on Wednesday, Sept 9, after a traffic accident on the Bukit Timah Expressway blocked one of the lanes leading towards the border crossing.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) advised motorists and travellers to expect delays after the accident occurred near Exit 10A on the BKE towards Woodlands Checkpoint.
According to ICA, one of the carriageway’s three lanes was blocked following the accident.
Bumper-to-bumper traffic on BKE
Traffic conditions worsened as vehicles built up along the expressway.
Land Transport Authority traffic cameras showed bumper-to-bumper traffic on the BKE towards Woodlands Checkpoint at around midday.
There was also a slight queue at Woodlands Crossing, although traffic along the Causeway itself remained relatively smooth at the time.
Two people taken to hospital
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said two people were taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital following the accident.
Police investigations and further details about the incident were pending at the time of the report.
Heavy traffic already expected during school holidays
The accident came as Singapore’s land checkpoints were already expected to experience heavy traffic during the September school holiday period.
ICA had earlier warned that Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints could experience very heavy traffic between Sept 4 and Sept 14.
During the recent National Day long weekend, more than 2.1 million travellers crossed Singapore’s land checkpoints, with some motorists experiencing waits of up to three hours during peak periods.
Travellers advised to plan ahead
ICA has encouraged travellers to check traffic conditions before beginning their journey and, where possible, travel during non-peak periods.
Motorists are also encouraged to use QR code clearance through the MyICA mobile app for faster immigration processing.
Travellers heading towards Woodlands Checkpoint should allow extra time, particularly while traffic remains affected by the accident and the ongoing school holiday travel rush.
