LUBAO, PAMPANGA, Philippines — What began as another day of relentless monsoon rains turned into a nightmare for families living near a river in Lubao, Pampanga, as powerful currents tore away at the riverbank and sent homes collapsing into the raging water.
At least five houses were destroyed, forcing 30 families, or 107 residents, to evacuate, according to a report aired by GMA News on Saturday. The disaster unfolded as the riverbank continued to erode, leaving nearby homes dangerously exposed to the powerful current.
For residents who watched their homes disappear, the devastation was almost too sudden to process.
One of them, Illuminada Cañeba, recalled fleeing in terror as the danger unfolded, saying she did not even have time to put on her slippers before escaping.
The situation reportedly worsened on Friday, August 28, when trash, debris and tree branches blocked the Santo Cristo Dam, according to Lubao Mayor Esmeralda Pineda. The obstruction caused water to overflow and damaged part of the riverbank’s slope protection, triggering severe erosion in the affected area.
The danger was far from over. During a live television report, another house began to collapse as the river continued eating away at the riverbank. A later report showed the same structure completely falling into the water.
Authorities have since prohibited residents from returning to the affected area as unstable ground and strong currents continue to pose a serious threat.
Pampanga’s Flood Crisis Deepens
The destruction in Lubao comes as Pampanga continues to battle widespread flooding caused by persistent rains associated with the Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat.
Separate reporting by the Philippine Daily Inquirer said Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda ordered preemptive and forced evacuations in vulnerable communities as renewed heavy rains triggered flooding across the province. The report also identified Lubao’s Barangays Sta. Rita and Sto. Cristo among areas where overflowing waters washed away homes.
As of the latest figures cited in that report, more than 315,000 families—or about 1 million people—had been affected across Pampanga, while thousands of residents remained in evacuation centers or received assistance outside them. The province has been under a state of calamity since August 12 amid the prolonged flooding crisis.
The crisis has also exposed the scale of the flooding problem across Central Luzon. Earlier reports said the Pampanga River had overflowed into hundreds of villages after days of heavy rain, affecting communities across multiple towns and cities.
Heavy Rains Still Threaten Central Luzon
The threat remains immediate. PAGASA warned that the Southwest Monsoon would continue bringing monsoon rains to Pampanga and other parts of Luzon, with the possibility of flooding and other rain-related hazards in vulnerable areas.
On Sunday, August 30, rainfall warnings were issued for parts of Central Luzon as the Habagat continued to bring heavy rains. Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone and riverside communities to remain alert and follow evacuation orders when necessary.
For the families of Lubao, however, the disaster is already painfully real. In a matter of moments, homes that once stood along the riverbank were reduced to debris—and for those living near the still-eroding shoreline, the question now is not only what they have lost, but whether the ground beneath the remaining homes will hold.
As the rains continue, authorities are urging residents to stay away from dangerous riverbanks and comply with evacuation advisories.
