Customer Allegedly Leaves S$1,600 Birthday Decorations Bill Unpaid, Business Owner Files Police Report

SINGAPORE — A business owner has filed a police report after a customer allegedly failed to pay more than S$1,600 for birthday decorations and lighting for his 12-year-old daughter’s party.

The dispute has drawn attention online after Wang Jun Yong, a 36-year-old business owner, shared screenshots of his alleged exchanges with the customer on social media. Wang claimed repeated attempts to collect payment went unanswered, prompting him to eventually seek police assistance.

Last-Minute Birthday Setup

According to Wang, the customer, identified in reports as Will, contacted him a day before the birthday celebration to arrange decorations for a party at a condominium near Orchard Road.

Because the booking was made at short notice, Wang said he did not collect his usual upfront deposit.

He completed the decoration setup at around 5.30pm, but claimed that the customer was not present at the location.

Wang said he was later told by the customer’s wife that Will was at Tanglin Mall and was expected to return at around 6.30pm.

But according to Wang, the wait continued for hours.

He claimed that he and the other service providers remained at the condominium until around 9.30pm, when security guards asked them to leave.

Wife Allegedly Said There Was No Money to Pay

The situation became more complicated when Wang claimed the customer’s wife told him that she did not have the money to pay for the services.

Wang said he then contacted Will through WhatsApp and sent him a receipt while attempting to collect the outstanding payment.

According to Wang, the alleged unpaid amount included:

  • S$700 for the birthday decorations
  • S$970 for the lighting setup

That brought the total disputed amount to more than S$1,600.

‘Please Relax, I Had a Really Hard Day’

In an Instagram video posted on September 7, Wang shared screenshots of WhatsApp conversations that he said were between him and the customer.

One message attributed to Will read:

“Please relax, I had a really hard day yesterday.”

According to screenshots reported by AsiaOne, Will said he had intended to make payment but claimed Wang had chosen to take legal action.

He also questioned whether all the promised services had been provided and said the money might have to be used for legal fees instead.

Business Owners Allegedly Removed From Group Chat

Wang said the dispute continued in a WhatsApp group chat involving himself, the lighting provider and the customer.

According to his account, both business owners continued asking for payment.

Wang alleged that the customer did not respond to their requests and later removed both of them from the group chat.

After repeated attempts to collect the money allegedly failed, Wang lodged a police report.

Police Confirm Report Was Filed

The Singapore Police Force confirmed to AsiaOne that a report had been lodged.

However, the filing of a police report does not by itself establish criminal liability or prove the allegations made by either party.

The payment dispute remains based on competing accounts, with Wang alleging that the services were completed and payment remains outstanding, while the customer reportedly questioned whether all promised services had been delivered.

A Costly Lesson for Small Businesses

The incident has also highlighted a common risk faced by small businesses handling last-minute bookings.

Wang said he normally collects a deposit before beginning work but did not do so in this case because of the short notice.

For service providers, particularly those working on events, decorations and other customized services, a last-minute cancellation or payment dispute can mean losing not only the expected income but also the cost of materials, transportation and hours of work.

The Bottom Line

A Singapore business owner has filed a police report after a customer allegedly failed to pay more than S$1,600 for decorations and lighting for a 12-year-old girl’s birthday party.

Wang Jun Yong claims he completed the work but was unable to collect payment despite repeated attempts. The customer, according to screenshots reported by AsiaOne, questioned whether all promised services had been delivered.

Police have confirmed that a report was lodged. The allegations and payment dispute have yet to be resolved.
