BEIJING — China has launched what is being described as the biggest automotive recall in the country’s history, with Tesla and eight other automakers taking action involving roughly 4.3 million vehicles amid growing concern over whether occupants can quickly escape—or rescuers can get inside—after a serious crash.
Tesla accounts for by far the largest share of the campaign, recalling nearly 2.98 million Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles manufactured in China or imported into the country.
But the extraordinary scale of the recall tells a much bigger story than one automaker.
China is putting increasingly sophisticated electric vehicles under a tougher safety microscope, particularly as electronic controls replace mechanical systems that drivers and rescuers have relied on for decades.
Why are millions of vehicles being recalled?
At the center of many of the recalls is a seemingly simple piece of equipment: the emergency mechanical door release.
Modern EVs can use electronic buttons, touch-sensitive controls and other powered mechanisms to open their doors during normal operation.
The problem can emerge in an extreme crash.
If a severe collision disables a vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system, occupants may have to rely on a mechanical emergency release instead.
Chinese regulators found that on affected Tesla vehicles, the emergency mechanical release can be difficult to recognize because it closely resembles the surrounding interior trim. That could make the handle harder to locate and operate when seconds matter.
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation warned that the problem could interfere with occupants attempting to escape and with rescuers trying to reach people inside the vehicle.
Tesla alone accounts for nearly 3 million vehicles
According to the official SAMR notice, Tesla’s door-safety recall includes:
- 973,156 China-made Model 3 vehicles
- 1,956,713 China-made Model Y vehicles
- 35,590 imported Model 3 vehicles
- 8,328 imported Model X vehicles
- 2,123 imported Model S vehicles
That brings the affected Tesla population to 2,975,910 vehicles.
The main Tesla door-release campaign is scheduled to begin on September 25, 2026.
Instead of replacing millions of doors, however, Tesla’s remedy illustrates how dramatically automotive recalls are changing in the software era.
The company will provide affected vehicles with clearer warning markings identifying the emergency releases. Tesla will also deploy an over-the-air software update designed to lower the windows following a collision, reducing the risk associated with occupants being unable to open a door normally.
Some vehicles that already have the required warning markings will not need another label.
Tesla isn’t alone
Reuters reported that Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Xpeng and companies under Geely, among others, are taking similar recall actions.
Approximately 390,000 Xiaomi vehicles, 371,000 Leapmotor vehicles and 264,000 Xpeng vehicles are included, while additional manufacturers account for smaller numbers.
In total, the coordinated actions involve about 4.3 million vehicles, making the campaign the largest automotive recall recorded in China, according to Reuters.
Geely, for example, filed a recall covering 92,658 Zeekr 007 and Zeekr X vehicles because their emergency mechanical releases could also be difficult to distinguish from interior trim.
The company plans to add warning labels and use an OTA update to modify window-control software so that windows can be lowered following an accident.
A fatal crash put emergency access under greater scrutiny
The regulatory action comes against the backdrop of serious questions about electronically controlled vehicle doors.
Reuters reported that Chinese state media previously described a fatal crash involving a Xiaomi SU7, in which bystanders reportedly had difficulty opening the vehicle’s doors while attempting to rescue the driver after the car crashed and caught fire.
Such incidents have intensified debate over whether increasingly automated vehicles still provide sufficiently obvious mechanical backups when electronics fail.
The issue is not limited to China.
U.S. regulators have also been examining risks associated with electronic vehicle doors and occupant entrapment after electrical failures, adding international pressure on manufacturers to reconsider how emergency releases are designed and identified.
China is changing the rules beginning in 2027
The recall also comes months before another significant change takes effect.
Beginning January 1, 2027, China will introduce stricter requirements surrounding automotive door handles, including mechanical release requirements intended to ensure doors can still be opened when electronic systems fail.
China has become the first major automobile market to move against certain concealed door-handle designs that became especially popular during the EV boom.
Existing approved vehicle models will have a longer transition period, with AP reporting that manufacturers will have until January 1, 2029, in applicable cases to bring them into compliance.
The shift could extend far beyond China’s borders.
China is the world’s largest automobile market and an enormous manufacturing base for electric vehicles. Changes forced on manufacturers there can influence vehicle platforms eventually exported to Asia, Europe, Australia and other markets.
Tesla also announced another major China recall—but for a different issue
There is another important detail that can easily be confused with the door-release campaign.
The same August 21 regulatory announcement says Tesla is separately recalling 2,740,642 China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over concerns involving driver-attention monitoring when certain assisted-driving functions are being used.
SAMR said the existing monitoring system may not adequately warn drivers when their gaze leaves the road.
Tesla plans another OTA software upgrade that will incorporate cabin-camera monitoring alongside steering-wheel torque monitoring to encourage drivers to remain attentive.
That figure should not simply be added to the 2.98 million-door recall total, because vehicle populations can overlap and the recalls address different defects.
China’s EV boom is entering its safety-regulation phase
The timing is significant.
Chinese automakers have spent years competing aggressively on range, charging speed, software, autonomous-driving features, interior technology and futuristic design.
Now regulators are increasingly asking a more basic question:
When sophisticated electronic systems stop working, can people still get out of the vehicle quickly?
In 2025 alone, China carried out 190 automotive recall campaigns covering approximately 6.846 million vehicles, according to SAMR.
The 4.3-million-vehicle door-related action announced in August 2026 therefore represents an unusually large intervention even by the standards of the world’s biggest auto market.
And because many of the fixes can be delivered through software and relatively inexpensive warning labels, the financial impact on manufacturers may be considerably smaller than the enormous headline number suggests.
The longer-term impact could be much bigger.
For years, flush and electronically operated handles became symbols of futuristic EV design.
China’s latest action suggests regulators increasingly believe that a feature designed to make a vehicle look more advanced cannot make emergency escape more complicated.
That principle—not simply the millions of cars being recalled—may ultimately prove to be the most consequential part of China’s record-setting automotive safety campaign.
