A deadly sword attack at a school in central Sweden has taken a disturbing new turn, with police investigating whether online communities may have influenced the 18-year-old suspect before he allegedly attacked students.
The attack happened on Friday, August 21, at Brinell School in Fagersta, northwest of Stockholm, while classes were in session. One 17-year-old girl was killed and three other students were injured. Two boys, aged 12 and 17, were seriously wounded, while another injured student was later released from hospital.
Police detained an 18-year-old man at the school and prosecutors have since ordered that he remain in custody on suspicion of murder and several counts of attempted murder.
Authorities say there is currently no indication that more than one attacker was involved. The motive, however, remains under investigation.
Police Turn Attention to Suspect’s Online Activity
One of the most significant developments in the investigation is the examination of the suspect’s possible links to online communities associated with school violence.
Reuters reported that investigators are examining whether a TikTok account believed to be connected to the suspect posted a photograph of a sword approximately 20 minutes before the attack.
The account, which had reportedly been active for about a month before being removed, allegedly contained references to previous acts of mass violence in Sweden as well as Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik.
Police are now investigating whether online communities may have encouraged or influenced the suspect. Authorities have not, however, established that online material caused the attack, and the investigation remains ongoing.
That distinction is important: the existence of disturbing online content does not by itself establish a motive or prove that an online group directed the attack.
Police Correct Earlier Information About the Arrest
Another detail has changed since the initial reports emerged.
Police initially indicated that shots had been fired during the arrest and that the suspect might have been injured. Swedish authorities later clarified that although police service weapons were used, the suspect was not injured during the arrest and did not require medical treatment.
The clarification comes as investigators continue questioning witnesses, examining evidence and conducting searches connected to the case.
Attack Came as Swedish Schools Remain Under Scrutiny
The Fagersta attack has renewed concerns about school safety in Sweden, which has experienced several serious acts of violence at educational institutions in recent years.
In 2015, a sword-wielding attacker killed three people at a school in Trollhättan before being shot by police. Swedish Radio’s reporting on that case later documented evidence that the attack had been planned and that the school had been specifically selected.
Sweden was also shaken by the country’s worst mass shooting in modern history in February 2025, when 10 people were killed at an adult education centre in Örebro before the gunman died by suicide, according to Reuters.
The latest attack therefore arrives amid broader questions about how Swedish authorities and schools can identify warning signs before violence occurs.
Political Campaigns Paused After the Attack
The tragedy also had an immediate political impact.
Several Swedish political party leaders suspended planned campaign appearances ahead of the country’s September 13 election. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson travelled to Fagersta to offer condolences and meet with people affected by the attack.
Local authorities have also provided support for students, families and staff dealing with the aftermath.
What Investigators Still Need to Establish
Despite the growing attention surrounding the suspect’s online activity, several major questions remain unanswered.
Investigators still need to establish:
- What motivated the attack.
- Whether the suspect acted alone.
- Whether the online account actually belonged to him.
- Whether online communities influenced his behaviour.
- When and how the attack was planned.
- Why Brinell School was targeted.
- Whether there were warning signs that could have alerted authorities beforehand.
For now, Swedish prosecutors have described the investigation as being at an intense stage, with interrogations and evidence-gathering continuing.
The most closely watched part of the case may now be what investigators discover about the suspect’s digital footprint—and whether it reveals a motive that was already forming before he entered the school.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not publicly established a definitive motive.
