Chelsea have opened the Xabi Alonso era with a statement victory — but not without a warning.
The Blues edged West London rivals Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage on Monday, August 24, in a breathless Premier League opener that showcased Chelsea’s attacking firepower while exposing defensive weaknesses Alonso will need to address quickly.
The result gave Alonso three points in his first Premier League match as Chelsea head coach and provided an immediate glimpse of the high-energy, transition-focused football he wants his team to play.
João Pedro strikes after just 31 seconds
Chelsea could hardly have asked for a better beginning.
With just 31 seconds on the clock, Cole Palmer slipped the ball toward João Pedro, who produced a composed finish over Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno to give Chelsea an astonishingly early lead.
The goal was recorded as the fastest goal in the opening round of a Premier League season, immediately putting Alonso’s new-look Chelsea into the spotlight.
The early goal also underlined the chemistry developing between Palmer and João Pedro, two of the attacking players Alonso is expected to build his system around.
Fulham, however, refused to collapse.
Fulham fight back before Chelsea regain control
The hosts responded in the 24th minute when Josh King beat Robert Sánchez at his near post to level the match.
Chelsea regained the advantage before halftime through Morgan Rogers, who finished after Maxence Lacroix provided the assist.
The second half produced another moment of quality from Chelsea’s attacking unit.
João Pedro helped create the opening for Palmer, who found the net to restore Chelsea’s two-goal cushion at 3-1.
For Alonso, it was an encouraging demonstration of what his attacking philosophy can produce when Palmer, João Pedro and Rogers are operating together.
Reuters reported that Alonso singled out the trio after the match, describing them as important pieces around which Chelsea can build the team.
Fulham refuse to go quietly
The game was far from finished.
Fulham pulled another goal back when Gonzalo García scored on his league debut, cutting Chelsea’s advantage to 3-2 and setting up a tense final period.
The home side continued to push for an equalizer, but Chelsea survived the late pressure. Antonee Robinson had an opportunity to level the contest, but his effort went wide.
The final whistle confirmed a winning start for Alonso — but the scoreline also highlighted an issue that could become increasingly important as the season develops.
Chelsea’s attack excites, but their defense raises questions
The biggest positive was obvious: Chelsea possess considerable attacking quality.
Palmer looked closer to his best after an injury-disrupted previous campaign, while João Pedro immediately showed why Chelsea will expect significant contributions from him. Rogers also announced himself with a goal on his Premier League debut for the club.
But Chelsea’s defensive performance was considerably less convincing.
The Guardian noted concerns over Robert Sánchez and Chelsea’s overall defending, while other analysis following the match also questioned whether the Blues have enough reliability in goal to seriously challenge at the top of the Premier League.
That could prove to be Alonso’s biggest early headache.
A team capable of scoring three goals away from home has plenty of reasons for optimism. But conceding twice against Fulham — and allowing the hosts to create a genuine late threat — demonstrated that Chelsea still have work to do without the ball.
Alonso wins the first battle
There was an added storyline at Craven Cottage: Alonso faced Álvaro Arbeloa, another former Real Madrid figure making his Premier League managerial debut with Fulham.
Alonso ultimately won that tactical and emotional battle, taking Chelsea to victory in the first league game of the 2026/27 campaign.
For Chelsea supporters, the most encouraging takeaway may not simply be the three points.
It was the way the front three combined.
João Pedro scored and assisted, Palmer scored and helped create the opener, while Rogers added the second goal. That attacking connection could become one of the defining features of Alonso’s Chelsea if it continues to develop.
The warning Chelsea cannot ignore
Still, one victory does not erase the problems.
Chelsea’s attacking potential is clear. Their defensive stability is not.
Alonso has inherited a squad with enormous expectations, and the opening-night performance suggested that his Chelsea could be considerably more entertaining and aggressive than the side seen under previous tactical approaches.
But if the Blues are serious about competing near the top of the Premier League, they will need to turn thrilling performances into controlled victories.
Against Fulham, Chelsea had enough attacking quality to survive.
The question now is whether they can become defensively strong enough to win when the goals eventually stop coming so easily.
For now, though, the Alonso era has its first three points — and Chelsea have given their supporters plenty to dream about.
