The race for Best Actress at the 49th Gawad Urian Awards is officially heating up, with Maris Racal, Odette Khan and Krystel Go among the eight actresses competing for one of Philippine cinema’s most respected acting honors.
The Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino unveiled the nominees on September 1, putting a spotlight on a diverse group of performers whose work spans independent cinema, mainstream productions and critically recognized films.
Racal earned her nomination for “Sunshine,” Khan for “Bar Boys: After School,” and Go for “I’mPerfect.” They are joined in the Best Actress category by Nour Hooshmand (“Cinemartyrs”), EJ Jallorina (“Dreamboi”), Rissey Reyes-Robinson (“Paglilitis”), Ruby Ruiz (“Tigkiliwi”), and Geraldine Villamil (“Republika ng Pipolipinas”).
The nominations give Racal another major awards-season moment for her performance in Sunshine. The film itself is among the five contenders for Best Film, alongside Quezon, Cinemartyrs, Bar Boys: After School, and Bloom Where You Are Planted. Director Antoinette Jadaone is likewise nominated for Best Director, while Sunshine picked up a total of eight nominations.
Khan’s nomination also adds another notable chapter to the awards run of Bar Boys: After School. The film collected seven Gawad Urian nominations, including Best Film, Best Director for Kip Oebanda, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Carlo Aquino.
For Go, the Best Actress nomination places her among the year’s prominent acting contenders following her performance in I’mPerfect. She is also part of an eight-film Best Actress lineup that includes performers from several critically discussed Filipino productions.
But the biggest story may be the strength of the overall field.
“Quezon” leads all films with 10 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director for Jerrold Tarog, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor for Jericho Rosales. Cinemartyrs and Sunshine follow with eight nominations each, while Bar Boys: After School received seven.
The Best Actor race is equally competitive, with Jericho Rosales, Carlo Aquino, Elijah Canlas, Earl Jonathan Amaba, Jomari Angeles, Julian Paul Larroder, Jojit Lorenzo and Miguel Odron in contention.
The 49th Gawad Urian nominations also include major names in the supporting categories. Dolly de Leon, Alessandra de Rossi, Jennica Garcia, Elora Españo, Gina Pareño, Rochelle Pangilinan and Eula Valdez are competing for Best Supporting Actress, while Will Ashley, Rico Blanco, Joshua Garcia, Enrique Gil, Iain Glen, Nanding Josef and Amado Babon are nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
Notably, the Gawad Urian nominations continue to highlight the breadth of contemporary Filipino filmmaking, with films such as Quezon, Cinemartyrs, Sunshine, Bar Boys: After School and Bloom Where You Are Planted competing for Best Film.
The awards body has yet to announce the date of the 49th Gawad Urian ceremony, according to PhilSTAR Life’s report on the nominations.
For now, one question is likely to dominate conversations among Filipino film fans:
Will Maris Racal’s “Sunshine” performance prevail, will veteran Odette Khan pull off an upset, or will Krystel Go emerge as the surprise winner?
