Cricket teams competing at the 2026 Asian Games will be offered hotel accommodation, Japan’s cricket chief says, as organizers push back against concerns over cramped facilities and the unusual lodging setup for athletes.
Japan is facing growing scrutiny over preparations for cricket at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, but officials are insisting that participating cricket teams will receive hotel accommodation rather than the more limited options being used by athletes in some other sports.
Naoki Alex Miyaji, CEO of the Japan Cricket Association, said cricket organizers had been discussing accommodation with the Asian Games organizing committee and the Asian Cricket Council for a considerable period.
“The participating teams in cricket are being offered hotel accommodation,” Miyaji said, according to AFP. He added that athletes from many other sports would be housed in facilities such as a cruise ship or temporary container accommodations.
The clarification comes after reports raised concerns about accommodation, dressing rooms and other facilities ahead of the Games, which begin in Japan later this month.
Why cricket became the center of attention
Cricket is still a relatively small sport in Japan, and organizers had to develop facilities for the Asian Games within a tight preparation period.
Matches will be staged at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Aichi Prefecture, a converted baseball facility roughly 40 minutes from central Nagoya.
Reports from India indicated that several major cricket boards had concerns about accommodation and venue arrangements. The Indian Express reported that teams had questioned the recently prepared playing surface, dressing-room arrangements and the size of some hotel rooms.
Media reports also suggested that India’s cricket authorities were considering whether to field a second-string team if the arrangements were not satisfactory. That should be treated as a reported possibility rather than a confirmed withdrawal or change of squad.
Japan says the cricket teams will have hotel rooms
Miyaji’s comments provide an important clarification.
While the Aichi-Nagoya Games do not have a conventional centralized athletes’ village, cricket teams are being offered hotel accommodation.
Japan’s cricket chief also said organizers had been working closely with the Asian Cricket Council to make the temporary cricket facilities as comfortable as possible.
The cricket venue itself will combine temporary and permanent infrastructure. India Today reported that organizers have also clarified that toilets will be available within the player areas, addressing some of the concerns that had circulated in earlier reports.
Miyaji said preparations effectively had to start from scratch because Japan did not have a suitable cricket venue in the Aichi area when planning began.
Asian Games accommodation is a much bigger issue
The cricket controversy comes against the backdrop of a much wider accommodation challenge.
More than 17,000 athletes and officials were registered for the Aichi-Nagoya Games, significantly above the roughly 15,000 participants originally anticipated.
Unlike the Paris Olympics, the Games will not rely on one traditional athletes’ village. Instead, accommodation will be spread across hotels, temporary wooden facilities and the Costa Serena cruise ship.
The Olympic Council of Asia and Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Organising Committee subsequently confirmed that accommodation had been secured for all 17,000-plus registered athletes and officials.
That clarification is important because earlier reports had suggested organizers could face a shortage of rooms. The OCA and organizers said all participants registered before the July deadline had been provided with Games-appropriate accommodation.
Cricket is preparing for a major Asian Games return
The spotlight on cricket is particularly significant because some of Asia’s biggest cricket nations will compete in Japan.
The women’s tournament runs from September 17 to 22, with eight teams competing.
The men’s tournament begins September 24, with 10 teams competing for the medals. India, the defending men’s champion, has been seeded directly into the quarterfinals.
Bangladesh has also announced a 15-member men’s squad led by Litton Das, while Pakistan has named its Asian Games squad led by Sahibzada Farhan.
The matches will be played in Twenty20 format, bringing some of the biggest cricket nations in Asia together for one of the continent’s largest multisport events.
Japan promises a high-quality cricket pitch
Despite the concerns surrounding facilities, Miyaji defended the quality of the playing surface.
The pitch is being prepared with assistance from the curator of Sri Lanka’s 35,000-capacity Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, and Miyaji said he believes the field could be the best seen during cricket’s history at the Asian Games.
That will be closely watched by the participating teams, particularly because conditions at a new or recently developed cricket venue can have a major effect on T20 competition.
The bigger picture
The controversy is less about whether Japan can host cricket and more about the logistical challenge of staging an expanded Asian Games without a traditional athletes’ village.
For cricket, Japan says teams will have hotel accommodation and that the playing facilities are being prepared to a high standard. At the same time, reports from major cricket nations show that concerns over logistics were genuine and had prompted questions before the tournament.
With the Games only weeks away, the real test will come when the teams arrive and the competition begins.
