Singapore’s beloved giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia are marking another birthday milestone at River Wonders, but this year’s celebrations carry an emotional twist: it could be their final birthday celebration in Singapore before they return to China in 2027.
Jia Jia turned 18 on September 3, 2026, while Kai Kai will turn 19 on September 14. River Wonders is holding special celebrations for the pair on September 5 and 13, where visitors can watch them enjoy specially prepared ice cakes and treat-filled enrichment boxes.
The pandas arrived in Singapore from China in 2012 under a 10-year conservation and research agreement. Their stay was extended by another five years in 2022, meaning their current arrangement is set to end in 2027.
A special farewell may already be underway
While Mandai has not described the September 2026 birthdays as an official farewell, The Straits Times reported that this could be the pair’s last birthday celebration in Singapore because they are scheduled to return to China next year.
The pair have become major attractions at River Wonders and an important part of Singapore-China conservation cooperation. Singapore has worked with China on giant panda research and conservation since 1994.
Their time in Singapore also produced a historic milestone: Le Le, their first cub, was born at River Wonders on August 14, 2021. Le Le became Singapore’s first locally born giant panda before returning to China in January 2024 to join the country’s giant panda conservation programme.
Panda fans get one more special experience
Adding to this year’s celebrations, River Wonders is hosting Singapore’s first Panda Planet Immersive Experience from September 4 to 14.
The exhibition features three zones covering panda science, conservation, facts about Kai Kai and Jia Jia, and a mixed-reality experience designed to give visitors a glimpse into the animals’ natural environment. It is included with River Wonders admission.
For many Singapore visitors, the celebrations could therefore be more than just another birthday event. They may be among the last opportunities to see Kai Kai and Jia Jia celebrating their birthdays in Singapore before the pair’s expected return to China in 2027.
The bigger story: more than just two pandas
Kai Kai and Jia Jia’s stay has also been part of a broader conservation partnership between Singapore and China. Their presence has helped raise awareness of giant panda conservation while giving Singaporean visitors a rare opportunity to see the species up close.
The pandas’ story also highlights the wider practice of “panda diplomacy”, in which China has used panda conservation partnerships to build international cooperation and goodwill.
For now, however, Kai Kai and Jia Jia are still at River Wonders — and Singapore’s panda fans have another September to celebrate with them.
