A legendary piece of Finnish furniture is getting a very unexpected fashion upgrade.
Finnish design house Artek has teamed up with Japanese leather specialist Hender Scheme for a new collaboration that puts handcrafted leather “shoes” on the legs of Alvar Aalto’s iconic Stool 60. The unusual partnership brings together two design cultures — Finnish modernism and Japanese leather craftsmanship — with a shared focus on materials that become more beautiful through use.
The collaboration, announced September 1, will launch globally on October 10, 2026, making the playful stool accessory part of a much larger furniture and homeware collection.
Yes, Artek’s Stool 60 actually gets its own “shoes”
The standout item is exactly what the headline suggests: miniature leather coverings designed to fit over the distinctive L-shaped legs of Artek furniture.
Made from vegetable-tanned leather, the pieces are handcrafted with construction details inspired by Hender Scheme’s approach to shoemaking. They are designed specifically for Artek’s L-leg furniture and can also serve the practical purpose of helping protect floors from scratches.
The concept is deliberately playful, but it is also rooted in function and craftsmanship.
And there’s a deeper design idea behind it: just as leather shoes develop character through wear, the leather accessories are intended to change naturally with age.
A 93-year-old design icon gets a new life
The centerpiece of the collaboration is the Stool 60, designed by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto in 1933.
The three-legged stool is one of Artek’s defining designs and uses Aalto’s patented L-leg construction, which bends solid birch into a 90-degree form. The design helped make the stool simple, stackable and suitable for mass production.
Artek says the Stool 60 has remained in continuous production since 1933 and has changed remarkably little in its basic material and form.
That makes the Hender Scheme collaboration particularly interesting: rather than replacing Aalto’s original design language, the Japanese brand is adding a new layer of material and personality to it.

Several of the furniture pieces replace conventional surfaces with vegetable-tanned leather, allowing the material to develop its own character as it is handled and used.
The furniture is designed to get better with age
That aging process is central to the collaboration.
Artek and Hender Scheme are focusing on Finnish wild birch and vegetable-tanned leather, two natural materials that change visibly over time. Instead of treating scratches, darkening and other signs of use as flaws, the brands regard those changes as part of the design.
The result is furniture that is intended to look different years after it leaves the showroom than it does on its first day.
Hender Scheme’s leather accessories follow the same philosophy, gradually developing a distinctive patina through handling and exposure.
Even Artek’s famous Pendant Light A330 gets a leather makeover
Another major highlight is the Pendant Light A330, one of Alvar Aalto’s recognizable lighting designs.
For the collaboration, Hender Scheme replaces the traditional brass shade with vegetable-tanned leather. The shade is shaped using a combination of wet-forming techniques and 3D printing, creating an unusual meeting point between traditional craft and contemporary technology.
The listed Japanese price for the collaborative Pendant Light A330 is ¥275,000.

The collection will go on global sale October 10, 2026.
Artek says it will be available through Artek’s stores and official online shop, Hender Scheme’s Sukima stores and official online shop, and selected retailers worldwide.
Before the global launch, the collection is scheduled to be publicly presented at an exhibition at Vitra’s Tramshed showroom in Shoreditch during London Design Festival, running from September 15 to 19.
Why this strange collaboration actually makes sense
At first glance, putting shoes on a stool sounds like a design joke.
But the partnership is more thoughtful than that.
Artek has spent decades building furniture around honest materials, functional construction and timeless forms. Hender Scheme, meanwhile, is known for treating leather as a material that gains personality through craftsmanship and aging.
The collaboration brings those philosophies together.
A 1933 Finnish furniture classic is essentially being given a Japanese-made pair of shoes — not because it needs them, but because the idea creates a new conversation between furniture, fashion and craft.
And that may be exactly why the collaboration is already generating so much attention among design and fashion audiences.
