Singapore Mum, 45, Mistaken for Her 18-Year-Old Son’s Sister After National Service Graduation Photos Go Viral

A 45-year-old Singaporean mother has captured social media attention after photographs celebrating her 18-year-old son’s National Service milestone prompted people to mistake the pair for siblings rather than mother and child.

Claudia Seah became the centre of online conversation after sharing a video celebrating her son Hayden’s completion of basic training with the Singapore Police Force.

Instead of focusing entirely on her son’s achievement, many viewers were surprised by Claudia’s youthful appearance, with some saying the two looked more like brother and sister.

Others even wondered whether she was his girlfriend.

The unexpected reactions quickly turned a family celebration into a viral conversation about age, appearance and the secrets behind maintaining a youthful lifestyle.

According to an interview with 8days.sg, Claudia is 45, while Hayden is 18. She said she regularly receives surprised reactions from people who discover that she is his mother.

One social media commenter reportedly remarked that the pair looked like siblings, while another wanted to know what skincare products she used.

But Claudia says her youthful appearance is not the result of expensive cosmetic procedures or complicated beauty treatments.

Instead, she credits several everyday habits that have become part of her routine.

The Instagram video that caught everyone’s attention

Claudia’s Instagram video was posted on October 20 and featured moments from Hayden’s passing-out parade.

In the video, she expressed her happiness at seeing her eldest child complete an important milestone in his National Service journey.

She also shared how the experience had changed her son’s behaviour, describing him as becoming more respectful and considerate towards others.

The post attracted more than 101,000 views, nearly 2,300 likes and almost 100 comments by Thursday afternoon, October 29, according to AsiaOne.

Many viewers focused on the apparent age difference between the mother and son, with several expressing disbelief that Claudia was already the mother of an 18-year-old.

When one commenter expressed surprise, Claudia explained that she had Hayden when she was 27.

Her secret to maintaining a youthful appearance

In an interview with 8days.sg, Claudia shared several everyday habits that she believes contribute to her youthful appearance.

Rather than relying on expensive beauty procedures, she credits consistent sleep, hydration and stress management.

Her routine includes:

  • Eight hours of sleep: Claudia said getting sufficient sleep has been a priority since she was a teenager.
  • Drinking enough water: She aims to consume approximately two litres of water daily.
  • Managing stress: She tries not to bring work-related stress home, allowing herself to rest and spend quality time with her family.
  • Regular exercise: She and Hayden sometimes exercise together at their home gym in Bangkok.
  • Supplements: She takes collagen and astaxanthin, an antioxidant.

Interestingly, despite working in the permanent make-up beauty industry, Claudia said she does not undergo aesthetic treatments.

She explained that balancing her business and family responsibilities leaves her with limited time for such procedures.

These are her personal lifestyle habits, rather than scientifically established explanations for her appearance. 8days+1

A Singaporean family now based in Thailand

Beyond the viral attention, Claudia’s family story also provides some context behind Hayden’s National Service experience.

Claudia and her Thai husband have been living in Bangkok for approximately a decade.

The couple relocated to Thailand when Hayden was nine years old. He was born in Singapore and spent his early childhood there before the family moved overseas.

Claudia and her husband have three children: Hayden, a nine-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son, according to her interview with 8days.sg.

While the rest of the family lives in Thailand, Hayden currently stays with his grandparents in Singapore.

Because he was born in Singapore and is a Singaporean citizen, he returned to fulfil his National Service obligations.

His time away from his family was initially challenging, particularly as he adjusted to the demands of training and living away from home.

However, Claudia said the experience helped him become more disciplined, patient and appreciative of his family.

National Service becomes a lesson in responsibility

For Claudia, her son’s graduation was about more than completing a military training milestone.

She believes the experience helped Hayden develop a better understanding of responsibility, respect and consideration for others.

She also expressed pride in the changes she had noticed in him since beginning his National Service journey.

Her comments attracted attention from other parents and Singaporeans, with some sharing similar experiences about how National Service had influenced their children’s maturity.

Another report by local publication MS News also highlighted Claudia’s positive assessment of her son’s experience, including his growing willingness to help around the house and his appreciation for family life.

Hayden is also considering furthering his studies at university following his stint with the Singapore Police Force, according to the report. MS News

More than just a viral mother-and-son photo

Claudia’s story has attracted attention because of the striking contrast between how old people assume she is and her actual age.

But behind the comments about skincare, beauty routines and youthful appearances is a mother celebrating her son’s progress into adulthood.

Her experience also highlights the emotional side of National Service for families whose children grow up overseas but return to Singapore to fulfil their obligations.

For Claudia, the biggest achievement was not the thousands of views or compliments about her appearance.

It was seeing Hayden become more responsible, considerate and appreciative of the people around him.

And while strangers may continue mistaking the pair for siblings, Claudia has made one thing clear: She is a proud mother of three, and watching her eldest son grow into a responsible young man is the real reason she is celebrating.
