MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Digital financing company Skyro has won a regional innovation award for a loan feature that allows Filipino borrowers to change their repayment schedules directly through a mobile application, challenging the traditional approach of requiring customers to follow fixed monthly payment arrangements.
The company received the Philippines Consumer Service Innovation of the Year – Financial Technology award at the Asian Innovation Excellence Awards 2026, held in Singapore on October 20.
The recognition highlights Skyro Flexi, a self-service feature that allows eligible borrowers to adjust monthly payment amounts or move their due dates without submitting paperwork or contacting a customer service representative for each change.
Skyro says approximately 40% of its customers have activated the feature, with 60% of those users making repayment adjustments.
Meanwhile, 87% of customer satisfaction surveys and app reviews mentioning Flexi reportedly expressed positive sentiment.
But an examination of Skyro’s official product terms reveals an important detail missing from the headline celebration.
Flexi is a paid add-on, and changing a payment schedule may affect the total interest a borrower pays.
That distinction raises a bigger question: Can flexible lending genuinely help Filipino families manage financial emergencies, or could the additional costs make some loans more expensive?
SKYRO WINS MAJOR FINTECH INNOVATION AWARD IN SINGAPORE
Skyro received the Philippines Consumer Service Innovation of the Year – Financial Technology award at the Asian Innovation Excellence Awards 2026.
The awards ceremony took place on October 20 in Singapore.
According to InsiderPH’s October 27 report, the recognition acknowledged the company’s efforts to offer borrowers greater control over loan repayment schedules.
Philippines Graphic independently published coverage of the award on October 26, while BusinessDiary also reported the company’s innovation and user-adoption figures.
The award reflects Skyro’s ability to introduce a consumer-focused product feature.
However, it does not automatically establish that its loans are cheaper than competing products or that every customer benefits financially.
Industry recognition is one measure of innovation, while actual affordability requires analysis of interest rates, fees and repayment obligations.
WHAT EXACTLY IS SKYRO FLEXI?
Skyro Flexi is an optional value-added service available through the Skyro mobile application.
It allows eligible customers with existing Skyro Product Loans or Cash Loans to make adjustments to their payment arrangements.
Borrowers can use the feature to:
- Lower their monthly payment when their budget becomes tight.
- Increase their monthly payment to finish paying a loan sooner.
- Move their payment due date to better match their salary schedule.
- Make permitted adjustments directly through the application.
Skyro says the feature removes the need for repeated calls, paperwork and manual approval when making supported changes.
The service is designed for borrowers whose financial circumstances may change during the life of a loan.
However, Flexi does not mean that debt obligations disappear.
The borrower remains responsible for paying the principal, applicable interest and fees under the adjusted arrangement.
WHY PAYMENT FLEXIBILITY MATTERS TO FILIPINO FAMILIES
Many borrowers manage expenses using income received on fixed or variable schedules.
A salaried employee might receive wages on the 15th and 30th of each month.
A commission-based worker could experience less predictable income.
Other households may face unexpected expenses involving medical care, transportation, education or family emergencies.
When a loan’s payment date does not align with available cash, borrowers may experience repayment pressure.
A feature that allows due-date changes could help customers coordinate loan payments with their income.
Similarly, reducing a monthly installment may create temporary breathing room during a difficult period.
However, lowering an installment can also mean paying down the principal more slowly.
That may increase the total interest charged, depending on the loan’s terms.
Flexibility can improve cash-flow management without necessarily reducing the overall cost of borrowing.
AROUND 40% OF SKYRO CUSTOMERS HAVE ACTIVATED FLEXI
Skyro’s latest announcement indicates growing adoption of the feature.
The company says approximately 40% of its customer base has activated Flexi.
Of those customers, around 60% have used the service to modify their payment arrangements.
The company also reports positive feedback among users who mention the feature in customer satisfaction surveys and app reviews.
These figures suggest interest in flexible repayment options.
However, the published information does not establish the complete survey sample, independent verification methodology or the financial outcomes experienced by participating borrowers.
The 87% positive-sentiment figure should not be interpreted as proof that 87% of all Skyro customers experienced lower borrowing costs.
It describes feedback within a particular group of survey responses and reviews.
SKYRO REPORTS MORE THAN THREE MILLION LOANS
The company’s wider business has also expanded.
Skyro says it has issued more than three million loans and attracted over seven million registered mobile application users.
These figures highlight its reach within the Philippine consumer finance market.
However, cumulative loans issued are not the same as currently outstanding loans.
Similarly, registered app users are not necessarily active borrowers.
A customer may download the app without taking out a loan or may no longer have an outstanding balance.
The figures demonstrate reported business scale but should not be interpreted as a direct measure of company profits or the number of borrowers currently using Flexi.
SKYRO FLEXI CAN BE USED UP TO SIX TIMES PER LOAN
Skyro’s official help center provides detailed rules that are important for borrowers.
According to the company, customers can use Flexi up to six times over the course of a loan.
That includes:
- Three changes to the monthly payment amount.
- Three changes to the payment due date.
The feature therefore does not provide unlimited modifications.
Customers also need to make changes at least six days before the existing due date for the adjustment to affect the next scheduled payment.
Borrowers who miss this timing requirement may not receive the desired change for their upcoming installment.
The service should be used as part of advance financial planning rather than assumed to provide unlimited last-minute relief.
DUE DATES CAN MOVE, BUT RESTRICTIONS APPLY
Skyro allows eligible borrowers to select a revised due date between the 1st and 29th of the month.
The 30th and 31st are not available as selected due dates.
The company also requires a minimum gap of 15 days and a maximum gap of 45 days between payments.
These conditions are designed to keep repayment intervals within defined limits.
For borrowers paid on unusual schedules, the rules may affect which dates they can choose.
Customers should check the available options in the application before assuming they can select any date.
THE BIG CATCH: SKYRO FLEXI IS NOT FREE
One of the most important details comes from Skyro’s own published terms.
Flexi is a paid optional service.
The company charges a fee calculated as a percentage of the borrower’s monthly loan payment.
The exact amount depends on the individual loan and is displayed in the application before activation.
Skyro says the fee is added automatically to monthly payments while Flexi remains active.
This means customers who use the service may pay more than they would under their original loan terms.
The public help center does not provide one universal peso fee applicable to every borrower.
Consequently, it would be misleading to advertise Flexi as completely free or to invent a fixed monthly charge.
Borrowers should check the exact amount shown in their account before accepting the service.
MOVING A DUE DATE CAN ALSO CHANGE TOTAL INTEREST
Skyro’s official explanation makes another important distinction.
The company says moving a payment due date does not change the loan’s stated interest rate or its scheduled term.
However, changing the number of days between payment dates can affect the amount of interest accrued.
A longer interval may lead to additional interest being charged in the final payment.
A shorter interval may reduce interest.
The precise impact depends on the relevant loan agreement and the adjustments made.
This is why borrowers should not assess Flexi solely through the new monthly payment displayed on their screen.
They should also review the adjusted total repayment amount.
A lower installment may feel easier to manage while still increasing the cost of the loan over time.
CAN OVERDUE BORROWERS STILL USE FLEXI?
There is an important eligibility limitation.
Skyro’s official help center states that Flexi cannot be used when a loan payment is already overdue.
The feature is available only while payments are current.
Skyro also says it does not charge the Flexi fee when the payment is overdue because the service cannot be used under those circumstances.
This distinction matters for borrowers who are already behind.
The product should not be presented as a guaranteed solution for accounts in default.
Customers facing existing arrears may need to contact the lender directly to discuss their options.
Waiting until after a payment is missed may prevent borrowers from using the automated repayment-adjustment feature.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A CUSTOMER CANCELS FLEXI?
Skyro says customers can cancel the service through customer care chat inside the application.
If the customer has not used Flexi during the current month, cancellation may take effect immediately without a charge for that month.
If the customer has already used it, cancellation takes effect the following month, and the current month’s fee may still apply.
Previously paid service fees are not refundable.
These conditions reinforce why customers should understand the service before activation.
Activating a feature for convenience is not the same as agreeing to a free adjustment.
SKYRO LOAN COSTS ALSO INCLUDE INTEREST AND ORIGINATION FEES
The cost of Flexi is separate from the underlying loan’s regular charges.
Skyro’s published Product Loan information lists loan amounts ranging from ₱3,000 to ₱100,000.
The company’s terms also describe interest charges and an origination fee generally calculated as 10% of the financed amount plus ₱690, although the final amount depends on the customer’s loan details.
Its Cash Loan product offers borrowing amounts of ₱5,000 to ₱250,000, with published monthly interest rates varying by loan and origination fees that can reach 20% of the approved amount.
Loan terms and available offers may differ depending on the customer and product.
The stated borrowing rate should not be confused with the effective interest rate once all applicable fees are considered.
The final loan agreement and disclosure statement are the authoritative documents for the individual borrower’s obligations.
LATE FEES CAN MAKE BORROWING MORE EXPENSIVE
Skyro’s official fee schedule also specifies late payment charges.
For qualifying Product Loans and Cash Loans, a late payment fee of ₱500 or 5% of the relevant loan amount, whichever is lower, may apply according to the agreement.
Such fees can recur while overdue amounts remain unpaid.
Additional collection-related charges may apply under specified circumstances.
Borrowers should therefore avoid assuming that changing a future payment schedule automatically removes earlier penalties.
Flexi may help customers manage an upcoming due date, but existing payment obligations and applicable charges still matter.
FINANCIAL REGULATORS REQUIRE DISCLOSURE OF BORROWING COSTS
The Philippines has rules intended to protect borrowers from unfair lending practices and inadequate disclosure.
The Truth in Lending Act and Consumer Act require appropriate disclosure of borrowing costs and relevant loan conditions.
The Securities and Exchange Commission also oversees financing and lending companies operating under its jurisdiction.
In July 2026, the SEC issued Memorandum Circular No. 20, setting out prudential, disclosure and market-conduct requirements for financing and lending companies.
The circular also addressed the regulatory framework for online lending platforms.
These rules reinforce the importance of transparent fees, responsible marketing and fair customer treatment.
A lender’s recognition for product innovation does not exempt it from consumer-protection obligations.
THE AWARD REFLECTS INNOVATION, NOT GUARANTEED SAVINGS
Skyro’s award is significant because it recognizes a feature intended to respond to borrowers’ changing circumstances.
But the product’s value depends on how it is used.
For someone whose payday moves, a revised due date may help avoid an inconvenient payment schedule.
For someone experiencing a temporary cash shortage, a lower installment may provide short-term relief.
However, those benefits need to be weighed against service fees and potentially higher interest costs.
The award should not be described as proof that Skyro offers the cheapest loans in the market.
Nor does it establish that Flexi has eliminated late payments or improved every customer’s financial position.
WHAT OTHER NEWS SOURCES CONFIRM
InsiderPH’s October 27 article reported the Asian Innovation Excellence Award, Skyro’s adoption figures and the growing popularity of Flexi.
Philippines Graphic separately covered the award on October 26.
BusinessDiary published the same core announcement and customer satisfaction figures.
Skyro’s October 21 official statement confirms the recognition and company-reported statistics.
However, much of this coverage is based on the lender’s own press material.
The strongest independent check on the feature’s actual conditions comes from reviewing Skyro’s publicly available loan documents and help center.
Those documents reveal the service fees, limits on changes, timing requirements and eligibility restrictions.
Earlier InsiderPH reporting from September also documented Flexi adoption using a different metric: 31% of eligible customers at that point.
Because the reported percentages use different dates and population descriptions, they should not be interpreted as directly comparable without additional methodology.
WHAT FILIPINO BORROWERS SHOULD CHECK BEFORE ACTIVATING FLEXI
Borrowers considering Flexi should review the full cost of their loan before changing any payment schedule.
A useful comparison includes the original monthly installment, the proposed new installment and the total amount payable under each arrangement.
Customers should also verify the service fee and whether changing the due date increases the final interest amount.
The remaining number of allowable adjustments matters.
Borrowers should make sure they are current on payments and that their requested change falls within the allowed timing window.
Most importantly, a loan remains a financial obligation even when the payment schedule becomes more flexible.
Borrowing should be evaluated based on affordability rather than the convenience of the application alone.
THE BIGGER QUESTION: CAN FINTECH FLEXIBILITY IMPROVE BORROWER FINANCES?
Skyro Flexi illustrates how digital lenders are competing on more than the speed of loan approvals.
The ability to adjust repayments without lengthy customer service processes could help customers manage irregular income and unexpected expenses.
Skyro’s growing adoption figures suggest demand for this flexibility.
Its Asian Innovation Excellence Award adds recognition to the company’s efforts.
But the full financial picture requires greater attention to costs.
Flexi is a paid service.
It has limits on usage, cannot be activated for overdue payments and may change the amount of interest charged when payment dates move.
For the broader Philippine fintech industry, the next challenge is making repayment flexibility genuinely useful while maintaining transparency and fair lending practices.
A flexible loan schedule can help manage cash flow, but it should not be mistaken for a cheaper loan or a guarantee against financial difficulty.
And as more Filipinos turn to digital lenders, one question remains:
Will Skyro Flexi help borrowers stay in control of their finances—or will service fees, interest charges and repayment restrictions reveal that convenience comes at a higher price?
