CEBU, Philippines — Philippine authorities are conducting a forensic examination of a laptop reportedly recovered from the former Cebu residence of Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan Markle, as investigators pursue allegations involving child sexual abuse material.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the Philippine National Police (PNP) expects the examination results to be available within approximately one week. Authorities have indicated that further legal action will depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation.
The case has drawn international attention because it involves a member of Meghan Markle’s family, potential digital evidence located in the Philippines, and coordination among law-enforcement agencies in multiple countries.
Laptop examination becomes a key part of the investigation
According to reports by Cebu Daily News, Philstar, and international news organizations, the investigation intensified after Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother, reportedly discovered alleged child sexual abuse images among belongings at their father’s former residence in Cebu.
Remulla said police inspected the property following the report and recovered a laptop. Investigators are now examining the device to determine whether it contains relevant evidence.
Digital forensic examinations can help establish the nature and origin of files, identify relevant electronic records, and support investigators in determining whether evidence may be connected to alleged criminal activity. However, the results of the examination have not yet been publicly established.
The PNP has also indicated that it will coordinate with foreign law-enforcement counterparts as the investigation progresses.
FBI and Philippine authorities coordinate
The investigation has extended beyond the Philippines. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confirmed that it is aware of the allegations and will provide assistance to Philippine authorities as appropriate.
Separate reporting by Philstar, citing National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag, said the FBI had sought assistance from the NBI in examining the allegations. The report also described communications involving Philippine law-enforcement agencies and a request to notify the FBI if potential victims are identified.
The involvement of agencies in both countries highlights the importance of international cooperation when suspected digital evidence, individuals, or potential victims may be connected to different jurisdictions.
Authorities have not publicly established the full contents of the laptop or announced a final forensic conclusion.
Meghan Markle says allegations are deeply distressing
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, said she was deeply distressed by the allegations involving her father. She also referred to earlier concerns that she said had been brought to her attention years ago.
Meghan has been estranged from her father since the period leading up to her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. She has previously explained that concerns about her father influenced decisions to keep him away from her children.
The controversy has also prompted renewed scrutiny of how earlier information was handled by British authorities.
According to Reuters and the Associated Press, the UK’s Metropolitan Police said it received a letter in January 2019 containing allegations of criminal activity outside the United Kingdom involving Thomas Markle Sr. The force said it forwarded the letter to the office of Prince Harry and Meghan but did not share the allegations with other law-enforcement agencies. It is reviewing its handling of the matter.
That separate review concerns the handling of the earlier letter; it does not establish whether the allegations against Markle are true.
Thomas Markle denies the allegations
Thomas Markle Sr. has denied the allegations, describing them as “sick lies,” according to reports citing comments published by the Daily Mail.
The allegations remain under investigation. No conclusion about criminal responsibility should be drawn before the relevant evidence has been examined and the appropriate legal process has taken place.
What happens next?
The next significant development is expected to be the outcome of the laptop’s forensic examination. Investigators will need to assess any relevant findings, verify the available evidence, and determine whether there are sufficient grounds for further legal action.
The PNP has said it will coordinate with counterparts abroad and pursue appropriate action if the evidence supports it. The FBI has also indicated its willingness to assist Philippine authorities.
For now, the central questions remain unanswered: What will the forensic examination establish, can investigators verify the origin of any relevant material, and will the evidence meet the legal threshold for charges?
The answers will depend on the findings of the investigation—not the allegations alone.
