Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, has revealed that she urged the superstar to scale back some of the high-risk stunts in her live performances after witnessing a frightening stage malfunction during the singer’s 2025 Cowboy Carter tour.
The incident happened on June 28, 2025, at NRG Stadium in Beyoncé’s hometown of Houston, Texas, when the red convertible used as an aerial stage prop suddenly tilted while suspended above the audience.
Beyoncé was performing “16 Carriages” when the vehicle began leaning sharply in midair. Video from the concert showed the singer gripping the structure and repeatedly telling the crew, “Stop,” as the music was cut and the car was brought back down.
Beyoncé appeared to remain composed during the incident, and her team later confirmed that the problem was caused by a technical malfunction. No one was injured and the concert continued.
Tina Knowles recalls fearing for her daughter
More than a year after the incident, Knowles has described just how frightening the moment was from her perspective.
Speaking to The Sun’s Bizarre column, Knowles recalled watching her daughter suspended above the crowd and said she had to make her way through the audience to get closer to her.
She said Beyoncé continued performing despite the danger, describing her daughter as a professional who remained focused on the show.
Knowles said she eventually urged Beyoncé to stop doing so many aerial and physically demanding stunts.
The conversation, according to Knowles, reflected a mother’s concern rather than a criticism of Beyoncé’s performances. Beyoncé’s response was reportedly that she still had a show to finish.
Beyoncé nearly fell from the flying car
The Houston incident quickly became one of the most alarming moments of the Cowboy Carter tour.
Beyoncé had been sitting on top of a red convertible suspended above the stadium floor as it moved around the venue. When the car tilted, she appeared to brace herself while holding onto one of the support cables.
CBS News reported that Beyoncé appeared to be wearing a harness during the stunt. Her publicist confirmed that the flying car had tilted because of a “technical mishap” and said it was quickly lowered.
ABC News similarly reported that the car suddenly stopped and tilted while Beyoncé was performing. Once she was safely back onstage, she reassured the Houston crowd, telling them that if she ever fell, she knew they would catch her.
Parkwood Entertainment, Beyoncé’s company, also confirmed that the flying car was a prop designed to carry her around the stadium and bring her closer to fans. The company said no one was injured and that the show continued without incident.
It wasn’t Beyoncé’s only stage malfunction
The flying-car scare was not the only technical problem Beyoncé encountered during the Cowboy Carter tour.
Earlier in the tour, during a performance at SoFi Stadium in California, Beyoncé experienced another unsettling stage moment involving the elaborate robotic frames used during “Cozy.”
Footage from the May 1, 2025 performance showed Beyoncé apparently searching for her position as the automated structures moved around her. She appeared to adjust her movements as the mechanical props were positioned around her. E! News reported that she managed to continue the performance despite the malfunction.
The Houston scare therefore became part of a broader pattern of unpredictable moments involving the highly technical production surrounding the tour.
Beyoncé continued the tour despite the scare
Despite the Houston incident, Beyoncé continued with the Cowboy Carter tour.
The tour ultimately concluded in Las Vegas on July 26, 2025, after 32 shows. The final concert featured a surprise Destiny’s Child reunion with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, marking the group’s first public performance together in seven years.
Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy also became a prominent part of the tour, performing as one of the dancers. The Associated Press noted that the teenager demonstrated a notable level of composure during performances, including an occasion when she helped her mother after an earring became caught in Beyoncé’s hair.
A spectacular show with very real risks
The Cowboy Carter tour was built around elaborate staging, moving platforms, aerial props, robotics, choreography and large-scale visual effects.
That production helped make the concerts visually ambitious, but the Houston malfunction also illustrated the risks involved when performers work with complex machinery high above a stadium audience.
Importantly, there is no indication that Beyoncé has announced plans to abandon elaborate stage productions or that she has stopped performing aerial stunts because of Knowles’ concerns. Knowles’ comments describe her personal reaction as a mother after witnessing the frightening incident.
For Beyoncé, the Houston show ultimately continued. For her mother, however, seeing her daughter suspended above thousands of fans while a mechanical problem developed was clearly a very different experience.
The incident may have lasted only moments, but more than a year later, Tina Knowles’ recollection shows that the scare remained vivid.
