A 64-year-old delivery rider died after falling into a condominium swimming pool in Tanah Merah while making a food delivery on the evening of Sept. 17.
Police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they received a call for assistance at around 8.40pm at 58 Tanah Merah Kechil Avenue. The man was found unconscious and taken to Changi General Hospital, where he later died.
The deceased was identified by Chinese-language media as Wang Zhicong, a 64-year-old Grab delivery partner. Reports said he had been walking into the condominium to deliver an order when he reportedly felt unwell and subsequently fell into the pool.
He was found unconscious and pulled from the water before being taken to hospital. The exact circumstances leading to the fall remain under investigation. Police said preliminary investigations do not indicate foul play.
Wang had reportedly worked as a salesperson before losing his job and turning to food delivery. He had been married for about 10 years and the couple had no children, according to reports.
His wife was informed of the tragedy after she could no longer reach him that evening. A colleague who accompanied her later told reporters that the couple had spoken by phone earlier that same afternoon.
Grab confirmed that one of its delivery partners had died in an accident. The company said it had contacted the family and would provide assistance while cooperating with the authorities as investigations continue.
The incident has also highlighted the risks faced by delivery workers, who often have to navigate unfamiliar residential developments, outdoor areas and changing conditions while completing orders.
For now, authorities have not indicated that anyone else was involved in Wang’s death, and investigations remain ongoing.
What remains unanswered is exactly what happened in the moments before the 64-year-old rider entered the pool — and whether his reported illness played a role in the fatal accident.
