Manchester City 5-0 Norwich City: Seventeen-year-old Floyd Samba announced himself on the senior stage with two goals on his Manchester City debut as the Carabao Cup holders swept aside Norwich City at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City began their defence of the Carabao Cup with a commanding 5-0 victory over Norwich City on Thursday, September 17, but the biggest talking point was the emergence of 17-year-old academy graduate Floyd Samba, who scored twice in his first senior appearance.
Samba was handed an unfamiliar central-striker role with Erling Haaland rested, and the teenager needed only 29 minutes to make his mark.
After Allan delivered a cross into the penalty area, Samba produced a composed header to put City ahead. Three minutes later, Rayan Cherki doubled the advantage after being played through by Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The teenager was not finished.
Samba doubles his tally
City continued to dominate after the interval, with Brazilian debutant Allan Elias adding a third goal in the 48th minute.
Just six minutes later, Samba struck again.
Receiving the ball on the right side of the penalty area, the 17-year-old curled an impressive effort beyond Norwich goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw to complete his brace and put City 4-0 ahead.
Ryan McAidoo then completed the scoring in the 90th minute, giving City a five-goal victory and sending the holders into the fourth round.
A debut that exceeded expectations
Samba described the night as “mind blowing” after his two-goal introduction to senior football.
The teenager, who is the son of former Premier League defender Chris Samba, also credited City’s established players with helping him settle into the first team.
“To get a debut like that is mind blowing,” Samba said after the match, according to Reuters. He added that he viewed the performance as only the beginning of his senior career.
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca also highlighted Samba’s finishing and overall performance, while noting that the teenager had not regularly played as a No. 9 before being given the role for the match.
City made 10 changes — and still dominated
The result was particularly notable because Maresca made 10 changes from the side that had started Sunday’s Premier League derby victory over Manchester United.
Alongside Samba, goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli and Allan made their Manchester City debuts. Allan marked his first appearance with a goal, while Rayan Cherki and Ryan McAidoo also found the net.
Sky Sports reported that Norwich finished the match without a shot on target. Norwich substitute Mohamed Toure appeared to score in the second half, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Norwich manager Philippe Clement said his side had been organised early in the game but acknowledged that City punished mistakes after taking the lead.
What comes next for Manchester City?
The victory extended Maresca’s start at Manchester City to six consecutive wins across all competitions, according to the club’s match report.
City’s reward in the Carabao Cup is a fourth-round home tie against Brighton & Hove Albion, scheduled for the week beginning October 26, with the exact date and kick-off time still to be confirmed.
For Samba, however, the significance of Thursday night goes beyond the scoreline.
A 17-year-old academy player was asked to lead the line against senior opposition, scored twice, earned man-of-the-match recognition and helped the defending champions reach the next round.
And if his own assessment is anything to go by, the Etihad may have seen only the opening chapter.
“That’s just the beginning,” Samba said.
