The Real Madrid defender has been recalled to the Three Lions for the first time since June 2025, while Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has also returned after both players were left out of England’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Tuchel’s latest selection marks the first England squad announcement since the World Cup and introduces a number of significant changes as the Three Lions begin their 2026-27 UEFA Nations League campaign.
England’s official announcement confirmed a 27-man squad for the September-October international window, which runs from September 21 to October 6.
Alexander-Arnold gets another chance
Alexander-Arnold’s return is arguably the biggest headline.
The 27-year-old had not represented England since June 2025 after Tuchel repeatedly opted for other right-back options. His absence continued through the World Cup, where England eventually finished third.
Now, the Real Madrid defender is back in the international picture.
Tuchel said Alexander-Arnold and Palmer both have an opportunity to demonstrate their value, while stressing that selection does not guarantee a starting place.
“It’s now time to fight for his place,” Tuchel said of Alexander-Arnold, according to Sky Sports. He also said the defender had made a positive start to the season and would return to the squad as a right-back.
That makes the upcoming Nations League campaign particularly significant for Alexander-Arnold. His return is not simply a recall — it places him back into competition for a position where Tuchel previously preferred other options.
Cole Palmer also returns
Palmer is another major name back in the England setup.
The Chelsea attacker was one of the most notable omissions from Tuchel’s World Cup squad. However, his early-season form has helped put him back into contention.
Tuchel pointed to Palmer’s improved numbers, including assists and decisive goals, as part of the reason for his recall.
Palmer now joins an attacking group that includes Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and captain Harry Kane.

Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha has also been selected.
The 18-year-old made his England debut against New Zealand in June and has now been retained in the senior setup as Tuchel continues to look at younger options.
Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is another notable inclusion. Scott could make his senior England debut after previously training with the national team without appearing in the warm-up matches.
There are also recalls for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lewis Hall, Jarrad Branthwaite and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Sky Sports reported that Reece James, Stones, Djed Spence, Dan Burn, Henderson, Ben White and Dean Henderson were among those unavailable through injury.
Foden’s continued omission is another major talking point. The Manchester City midfielder was left out of the World Cup squad and has again failed to make Tuchel’s latest selection. The Guardian also highlighted the absence of Foden alongside the recalls of Alexander-Arnold and Palmer.

The timing of Alexander-Arnold’s return could hardly be more significant.
England’s first match of the new Nations League campaign is against Spain at Wembley on September 26.
Spain enter the fixture as the reigning world champions, giving Tuchel’s side an immediate high-profile test.
England will then travel to Prague to face Czechia on September 29 before playing Croatia in Rijeka on October 3. The international window concludes with another home meeting against Czechia on October 6.
The Nations League therefore gives Tuchel an early opportunity to assess his post-World Cup squad against strong opposition.

The most intriguing storyline may not be whether Alexander-Arnold can simply get back into the squad.
