South African police have discovered the body of a ninth woman east of Johannesburg in the past two months, deepening concerns over a series of killings in the area.
The latest body was found on Thursday in Dawn Park, part of the Ekurhuleni municipality. Police have imposed a lockdown in nearby Kempton Park and set up roadblocks after three bodies were discovered in the area this week.
Authorities are investigating whether the deaths are connected. Police said similarities between some of the cases have raised concerns, but they have not confirmed that a serial killer is responsible. Investigators are also considering the possibility of multiple suspects or unrelated perpetrators.
The victims, who were in their 20s and 30s, were found naked or partially clothed, with some showing similar signs of bruising. Police are comparing evidence, timelines, locations and victim profiles as part of the investigation.
One victim was identified as 38-year-old Elizabeth Tsontso Moselakgomo, who disappeared while out jogging. Her body was later found behind a hotel. Another early victim, a 37-year-old woman, was found naked and restrained with cable ties in July. A suspect was arrested in connection with that case.
Police have offered a 400,000-rand reward for information that could help identify those responsible. Investigators have also urged the public to remain cautious, particularly in isolated areas.
The deaths have renewed concerns over violence against women in South Africa, where authorities and civil society groups continue to call for stronger measures to address gender-based violence.
