RIO DE JANEIRO — João Pedro’s return to the Brazilian national team has been stopped before it could properly begin.
The Chelsea striker has withdrawn from Brazil’s upcoming friendlies against Australia and India because of injury, forcing coach Carlo Ancelotti to make an unexpected change only days before the Seleção begins its first international window since the 2026 World Cup.
The timing could hardly be more frustrating for the 24-year-old.
João Pedro was one of the notable names recalled by Ancelotti after being omitted from Brazil’s World Cup squad earlier this year. Since then, he has started the new Premier League campaign in outstanding form, earning August’s Player of the Month award before scoring and assisting again in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Hull City last weekend.
Now, instead of joining Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Estêvão and the rest of Brazil’s revamped squad, he will remain out of the international matches while Fluminense midfielder Matheus Martinelli receives the first senior Brazil call-up of his career.
CBF confirmed the injury — but did not specify exactly what it is
Brazil’s football federation announced Wednesday that Martinelli had been summoned because João Pedro was injured.
The official CBF statement did not disclose the nature or expected recovery time of the injury. Reuters likewise described it as unspecified.
That distinction is important because some Brazilian outlets have reported additional details.
Globo’s ge reported that João Pedro sustained the problem during Chelsea’s match against Hull City, while SBT and other Brazilian reports described it as a knee issue. Chelsea had not publicly provided the same level of medical detail in the sources available at the time of publication.
So the safest formulation remains:
João Pedro has been ruled out through injury; the CBF itself has not publicly specified the diagnosis.
He played the entire Hull match — and produced a goal and an assist
What makes the development particularly surprising is that João Pedro completed Chelsea’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Hull City on Saturday.
He was directly involved in both Chelsea goals.
In the seventh minute, he received the ball in attack and supplied Morgan Rogers, who opened the scoring.
Then, after Hull turned the match around, João Pedro equalised in the 66th minute, converting Cole Palmer’s low cross with a powerful left-footed finish.
Chelsea’s official match report also recorded a second-half collision involving João Pedro and Hull defender Nobel Mendy, although the club did not identify that incident as the cause of his subsequent withdrawal.
Brazilian media subsequently reported that he continued experiencing discomfort after the game.
João Pedro had become one of the Premier League’s hottest forwards
His absence is significant because João Pedro entered this international window in arguably the best club form of his career.
The Premier League named him its EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August, the first time he had won the award.
Across Chelsea’s first two league matches, he scored two goals and supplied two assists, helping Xabi Alonso’s side win both games.
Against Fulham, he scored after only 31 seconds and later assisted Palmer’s winner.
Against former club Brighton & Hove Albion, he scored again and once more set up Palmer for the decisive goal.
Add his goal and assist against Hull, and João Pedro had already accumulated three goals and three assists in Chelsea’s opening four Premier League games.
That form had also earned striking praise from Alonso.
Only days before the injury news, the Chelsea manager said João Pedro reminded him in several ways of former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema because of his intelligence, movement and ability both inside and outside the penalty area.
His Brazil recall had carried extra meaning after the World Cup snub
João Pedro’s September call-up was not routine.
Ancelotti had left him out of Brazil’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, although the Italian coach publicly said at the time that João Pedro and other young players remained part of Brazil’s longer-term project.
Brazil’s first post-World Cup squad therefore represented an immediate second chance.
CBF described the September group as the beginning of the country’s path toward the 2030 World Cup, with Ancelotti selecting 26 players and placing greater emphasis on renewal.
Only nine members of Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad were retained in the new selection, according to AFP reporting carried by UOL.
João Pedro was supposed to be part of that reset.
Instead, injury means he will have to wait again.
Brazil face Australia twice before a historic first meeting with India

Ancelotti’s team will then travel to Kolkata for an October 3 friendly against India at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, commonly known as Salt Lake Stadium.
According to the CBF, that match will be the first senior international meeting between Brazil and India.
The unusual three-match window is part of FIFA’s newly consolidated September-October international period, which Chelsea said runs from September 21 to October 6.
João Pedro’s replacement is not another striker
Ancelotti’s reaction to the withdrawal is interesting.
Instead of replacing João Pedro with another centre-forward, Brazil called up Matheus Martinelli, a 24-year-old central midfielder from Fluminense.
Martinelli has never previously represented Brazil’s senior national team.
Globo reported that the midfielder came through Fluminense’s academy and made his first-team debut in 2020. His selection also means Fluminense has a player in the senior Brazil squad again after a roughly two-year absence.
Martinelli had already been under observation by Ancelotti’s staff and was reportedly included on Brazil’s preliminary list before missing the original 26-man selection.
His late call-up therefore appears less like a random emergency choice and more like an opportunity Ancelotti had already been considering.
The switch may reveal something about Ancelotti’s priorities
Replacing an injured striker with a midfielder also changes the balance of the squad.
Brazil still have considerable attacking depth.
Ancelotti’s original list included Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Endrick, Estêvão, Pedro, Rayan and Samuel Lino, among others.
UOL noted that Flamengo striker Pedro remains the clearest traditional centre-forward option following João Pedro’s withdrawal, while players such as Endrick and Vinícius can also operate centrally depending on Ancelotti’s system.
By using the vacancy to add Martinelli instead, the coach gains another central-midfield option as he reshapes the team after Brazil’s World Cup exit.
Brazilian coverage has described midfield depth as one area Ancelotti is examining closely during the start of the new cycle.
Chelsea have their own problem now
Brazil’s loss is also becoming Chelsea’s concern.
João Pedro was absent from first-team training earlier this week ahead of Chelsea’s next Premier League match against Brentford, with his international withdrawal confirming that the issue was more than simple load management.
Folha reported that he is expected to miss the Brentford match.
That would deprive Alonso of the player who led Chelsea’s scoring last season with 20 goals in all competitions and who has begun the new campaign as one of the league’s most productive attackers.
Chelsea already dropped points against Hull and entered the next round with seven points from their opening four league matches.
João Pedro’s availability therefore matters to two teams at once.
Brazil lose a forward Ancelotti had just brought back into his plans.
Chelsea risk losing their No. 9 just as their domestic campaign begins to accelerate.
For João Pedro, the timing is the cruelest part
In May, Ancelotti told the players he had left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad that they could still form part of the next cycle.
João Pedro responded on the field.
He finished 2025-26 as Chelsea’s leading scorer, began 2026-27 with goals and assists, won the Premier League’s first monthly player award of the season and earned his Brazil recall.
Then, less than a week before he was due to report for international duty, injury interrupted the comeback.
There is no public indication from the CBF that this is a long-term problem, and without a confirmed medical diagnosis it would be premature to speculate about his recovery timetable.
But for a player trying to establish himself in Ancelotti’s plans for 2030, every national-team window carries weight.
João Pedro had finally reopened that door.
Now he has to get healthy enough to walk through it.
