Hong Kong filmmakers Danny and Oxide Pang are returning to the horror genre with The Mage, a new Cantonese-language supernatural thriller starring Josie Ho.
The film marks another collaboration between the Pang brothers and Ho, who has worked with the filmmakers on several projects throughout their careers.
The Mage centres on a woman whose life becomes entangled with a series of disturbing supernatural events. The story explores themes of fear, belief and the consequences of confronting forces that cannot easily be explained.
Ho takes on the leading role, while Iranian actor Iman Taheri is also part of the cast. The production brings together Hong Kong filmmaking talent with an international cast.
The Pang brothers are best known for their work in Asian horror, particularly their 2002 film The Eye, which became an international success and was later remade in Hollywood.
Their other notable films include The Eye 2, The Eye 10 and Re-Cycle, as well as a number of crime and thriller productions.
For Ho, the project continues a long association with Hong Kong’s independent and genre cinema. She has appeared in films ranging from horror and crime thrillers to action and drama.
The decision to make The Mage in Cantonese also reflects the filmmakers’ continued connection to Hong Kong cinema, while allowing them to explore supernatural storytelling through a distinctly local setting and language.
The Pang brothers are expected to bring their signature approach to atmosphere and suspense to the new film, with the production combining supernatural elements with psychological tension.
