Singaporean singer Kit Chan marked her 54th birthday by keeping things deliberately low-key at home — choosing rest and preparation over a big celebration as she gets ready for her return to the Singapore stage.
Chan, who turned 54 on Sept. 15, shared on Instagram that she had placed herself under a “self-imposed home quarantine” ahead of her upcoming concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Sept. 19.
Kit Chan chooses a quiet birthday
The singer explained that Singapore’s haze and the possibility of falling ill were among the reasons she decided to stay home.
Rather than treating the quiet birthday as a disappointment, Chan said she kept herself occupied by practising her songs, exercising and tending to the small food garden on her balcony.
She also shared that she had been receiving well-wishes and gifts from loved ones throughout the month, which had given her plenty of reasons to celebrate.
One unexpected visitor also made an appearance: a hornbill that Chan said had eaten five of the chillies she had grown herself.
Despite the haze and difficult events around the world, Chan described September as looking “rosy and promising” and reflected on the importance of appreciating life.
“If age has taught me anything, it is to embrace life with gratitude and to make the most of every day.”
Preparing for her Singapore comeback
Chan’s decision to stay home comes just days before her Atrium Live Tour concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Sept. 19.
The show will mark her first Singapore concert in three years. Her most recent local concert was held at Sands Theatre in 2023.
The 2026 tour has taken Chan to cities in China before returning home for the Singapore leg.
According to The Kallang, the Singapore concert is scheduled for 8pm on Sept. 19. Ticket listings show prices starting from S$128, with other ticket categories going up to S$288.
What ‘Atrium’ means to Kit Chan
The concert’s title has a personal meaning for Chan.
In a June interview with The Straits Times, she explained that an “atrium” represents a symbolic inner chamber where a person’s deepest secrets, joys and unspoken pain can reside.
For Chan, that space can be filled with emotion — sometimes turbulent and sometimes calm and reflective.
The theme also ties into her reflections on love and relationships.
In the same interview, she discussed a Valentine’s Day Instagram post in which she wrote that she was “waiting for spring to come”, explaining that she was not rushing to pursue a relationship.
She said that agape, a form of selfless, non-sexual love, has always been particularly important to her because she sees it as the foundation of relationships.
A career spanning decades
Chan remains one of Singapore’s best-known homegrown singers, with a career spanning more than three decades.
Among her best-known songs are “Heartache”, released in 1994, and “Home”, the 1998 song that became closely associated with Singapore’s National Day celebrations.
Her return to Singapore comes as she continues her concert tour while marking another personal milestone.
For now, however, the singer appears to be keeping her focus on the stage — and on staying healthy enough to perform when the lights come up at the Indoor Stadium.
