NEW YORK — Frances Tiafoe finally found the answer to one of the toughest questions of his tennis career — and he did it on the court he calls the “people’s court.”
The American star produced one of his finest performances at the 2026 US Open, defeating former champion Daniil Medvedev 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6) to storm into the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.
For Tiafoe, the victory carried far more weight than simply reaching the last eight.
Medvedev had repeatedly frustrated the American over the years, but Tiafoe finally broke through when it mattered most, delivering an aggressive and fearless performance built around sharp net play, precise volleys and a willingness to take the fight directly to the former US Open champion.

Tiafoe will now face fellow American Alex Michelsen in the US Open quarter-finals after Michelsen defeated Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets.
The matchup guarantees that at least one American will advance to the semi-finals.
Michelsen’s run has also been one of the stories of the tournament, with Reuters reporting that he reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final after continuing his impressive form in New York.
For Tiafoe, however, the Medvedev victory could represent something even bigger.
The American did not simply defeat a former US Open champion.
He overcame an opponent who had repeatedly stood in his way, changed his tactical approach by attacking the net and trusted his instincts under enormous pressure.
