SEOUL, South Korea — The NC Dinos are trying to pull off another late-season escape.
With the 2026 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular season entering its final stretch, NC is once again chasing a postseason berth after putting together a dramatic surge that has pulled the club back into contention.
The Dinos currently sit sixth at 55-59-2, just 4½ games behind the fifth-place Doosan Bears, who occupy the final postseason position.
The deficit is significant—but not necessarily decisive.
NC has seven games in hand on Doosan, giving the Dinos an opportunity to make up ground as the schedule enters its most important phase.
And now, the two rivals are about to face each other.
Seven wins brought NC back into the picture
The Dinos had been trending sharply upward, winning seven consecutive games before their streak ended Sunday.
That surge dramatically changed the playoff race.
The gap between NC and Doosan had been eight games on Aug. 30, but NC’s winning streak combined with Doosan’s struggles reduced it to just 3½ games before Sunday’s games. It now stands at 4½ games after both teams won Sunday.
For NC, the recent run has revived a postseason dream that looked considerably less realistic only a week earlier.
The Dinos are attempting to repeat what they accomplished last year, when they won their final nine regular-season games to grab the last playoff spot.
Doosan finally finds its offense
The Bears, however, are not simply waiting for NC to catch them.
After losing five straight games, Doosan erupted Sunday against the SSG Landers, pounding out 16 runs on 12 hits in a 16-9 victory.
That offensive explosion came after an extended scoring drought. Doosan had scored only four runs across its previous five games and had been shut out twice during that stretch.
The timing could not have been more important.
Doosan remains in the fifth and final postseason position, and Sunday’s victory prevented NC from cutting the deficit further.
Then comes the showdown at Jamsil
The playoff race now moves toward one of its most intriguing matchups.
NC and Doosan will meet for two games at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul this weekend, giving the Dinos a direct opportunity to attack the team immediately ahead of them.
On paper, however, Doosan has dominated the season series.
The Bears own an 8-3 record against NC this season.
But the Dinos have one important advantage: seven games in hand.
That means the current 4½-game gap does not tell the entire story.
NC has already shown it can survive a late-season race
The Dinos’ current situation has an obvious parallel with 2025.
Last season, NC stormed through the closing stretch by winning its final nine regular-season games and claimed the last postseason ticket.
That experience gives the club reason to believe another late surge is possible.
But repeating that feat will require more than momentum.
NC must continue winning while hoping Doosan drops enough games to make the remaining gap disappear.
The schedule is changing—and that matters
The KBO is now entering a different part of the regular-season calendar.
Beginning this week, teams will focus on makeup games, rather than simply playing the usual pair of three-game series.
That creates a more compressed and unpredictable schedule as clubs attempt to complete games postponed earlier in the season.
For a team chasing a playoff spot, every additional game can become critical.
A postponed contest that might have seemed insignificant months ago could now determine whether NC gets another opportunity to close the gap.
The race at the top is changing too
While NC and Doosan battle for the final postseason position, the top of the KBO standings has also become increasingly competitive.
The Samsung Lions have climbed back into first place at 72-46-3 after winning two straight.
The KT Wiz, meanwhile, have slipped to second at 69-46-3, 1½ games behind Samsung after losing three consecutive games.
That means the final stretch of the regular season is producing pressure at both ends of the standings.
At the top, teams are fighting for positioning.
Near the cutoff, NC is fighting simply to stay alive.
One weekend could define the Dinos’ season
The numbers give NC a realistic path.
The Dinos are only 4½ games behind Doosan and have seven games in hand. Their recent seven-game winning streak demonstrated that they can string victories together quickly.
But their Sunday loss to Kiwoom showed how quickly momentum can disappear.
And the Bears have already demonstrated that they can respond when the pressure rises.
The weekend series at Jamsil therefore carries far more weight than two ordinary regular-season games.
For NC, it is a chance to cut directly into the deficit.
For Doosan, it is an opportunity to create separation.
And with the postseason cutoff approaching, the margin for error is rapidly disappearing.
The Dinos have done this before. Now they need another miracle finish—and this time, Doosan is standing directly in their way.
