The mother of a 16-year-old Malaysian schoolgirl who died after being stabbed at school last year has shared an emotional tribute to her daughter, saying the pain of her loss has not faded with time.
In a Facebook video posted on September 14, Aapple Wong recalled the day she learned that her daughter, Yap Shing Xuen, had died. She described October 14, 2025, as the darkest day of her life.
Yap was fatally stabbed by a 15-year-old male schoolmate at SMK Bandar Utama 4 in Selangor. The boy was arrested and charged with murder, but was later acquitted after the High Court found that he was of unsound mind at the time of the incident. The court had previously ordered him to undergo psychiatric evaluation.
Reflecting on her daughter’s childhood, Wong described Yap as disciplined, caring and determined. She recalled raising her daughters as a single mother and making the most of the time they spent together on weekends.
The family would go running, hiking and visit the beach, where Wong said Yap enjoyed collecting seashells. Those ordinary moments have become especially meaningful to her following her daughter’s death.
Wong said she continued working and carrying out her daily routines after the tragedy, but felt that something important was permanently missing from her life.
She also spoke about the difficulty of finding someone with whom she could share her grief, saying she often breaks down when memories of her daughter return.
Wong said people had told her that time would eventually heal the pain. Instead, she has come to believe that some forms of grief remain, even as people gradually learn how to live with them.
The mother ended her tribute by saying that Yap would always remain her daughter and expressing her hope that they could be reunited as mother and daughter in another life.
The tribute comes nearly a year after the school tragedy and highlights the continuing impact of the loss on Yap’s family.
