Chinese scientists have developed a compact computed tomography scanner weighing just 6kg, in a breakthrough that could make advanced medical imaging easier to deploy outside conventional hospital settings.
The device has been designed to provide CT imaging capabilities in a much smaller and lighter form than traditional scanners, which typically require dedicated rooms, substantial infrastructure and specialised installation.
Its compact design could open up new possibilities for medical imaging in locations where conventional CT equipment is difficult to install or transport. Potential applications include smaller medical facilities, emergency settings and areas with limited access to large diagnostic equipment.
Researchers have focused on reducing the size and weight of the system while retaining the imaging capabilities required for CT examinations. The development reflects wider efforts to create portable medical technologies that can bring diagnostic services closer to patients.
Traditional CT scanners rely on large components and complex systems to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body. Shrinking the technology requires advances in areas including X-ray generation, detectors, imaging reconstruction and system integration.
