Passengers were evacuated from an MRT train at Bukit Gombak station on Tuesday (Sept 15) after smoke was seen coming from underneath one of the carriages.
The incident happened at around 11.40am at Bukit Gombak station on the North-South Line.
SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai said preliminary checks suggested that a faulty brake may have caused the smoke.
As a safety precaution, SMRT staff assisted all passengers in leaving the train. No commuters were reported to have required medical attention.
Video footage from the station showed smoke filling parts of the platform as commuters waited outside the train. SMRT staff were seen coordinating the response and checking the affected train.
One passenger told Channel NewsAsia that he was initially confused because commuters were not given much information about what was happening. He said he saw smoke around the roof of one of the train cars and experienced an estimated eight- to 10-minute wait for the next train.
The affected train was subsequently withdrawn to the depot for further inspection.
Despite the incident, train services continued to operate normally, with no major disruption reported on the North-South Line.
SMRT is continuing checks on the train to determine the exact cause of the smoke.
