Bus Captain Becomes Unresponsive at Wheel in Hougang, Commuters Rush to Stop Moving Bus

A Tower Transit bus captain suffered a sudden medical emergency while driving through Hougang, leaving commuters to spring into action to bring the moving bus safely to a stop.

The incident happened at around 1.30pm on Sept 14, when the captain was driving Service 854 along Hougang Avenue 3 and became unresponsive as the double-decker bus approached a bus stop.

A man waiting at the bus stop noticed that the driver appeared slumped over in the driver’s cabin. He immediately banged on the bus doors to alert passengers that something was wrong.

Several commuters then rushed forward to help.

One passenger checked on the bus captain, while another called for an ambulance. A third passenger climbed into the driver’s cabin and engaged the handbrake, bringing the bus safely to a stop.

The man who first raised the alarm also helped explain the situation to Tower Transit’s control centre.

An SBS Transit bus captain who was nearby also stepped in and alerted Tower Transit’s control centre about the emergency.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that it received a call for assistance at about 1.30pm along Hougang Avenue 3. One person was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Tower Transit later said its bus captain was in stable condition and receiving medical care. All passengers on board the bus were safe.

Tower Transit has since launched a search for the commuters who helped during the emergency so that it can thank them personally.

The operator is looking for the man who alerted passengers, the three commuters who assisted on board and the SBS Transit bus captain who helped contact its control centre.

In a Facebook post, Tower Transit thanked the members of the public for their quick thinking and described their actions as an example of a caring commuter culture.

The operator said those involved can contact Tower Transit through its social media channels or call its hotline at 1800-248-0950.

For the passengers on Service 854, what began as an ordinary bus journey suddenly became an emergency.

But within moments, several strangers stepped forward — checking on the stricken driver, calling for medical help and taking action to make sure the bus stopped safely.

Tower Transit said its priority remains the recovery of its bus captain, who is continuing to receive medical care.
