SINGAPORE — Ilhan Fandi announced his return to Singapore football in spectacular fashion, scoring twice on his Lion City Sailors debut to power the defending champions to a 2-0 victory over Tampines Rovers and the 2026/27 Playback Community Shield.
The 23-year-old Singapore international struck in the 17th and 26th minutes at Jalan Besar Stadium, giving the Sailors an early two-goal cushion that ultimately proved decisive in the season-opening showdown.
The official Singapore Premier League confirmed the 2-0 result in front of 3,865 spectators, with Ilhan scoring both goals before the Sailors’ defence held firm through a determined second-half response from Tampines.
Ilhan Fandi Makes Instant Impact
Ilhan needed only 17 minutes to make his mark.
The forward reacted quickest to a dangerous cross from Diogo Costa after a slick attacking move from the back, heading the ball home to put Lion City Sailors ahead.
Nine minutes later, he struck again.
A combination between Farhan Zulkifli and Bart Ramselaar created space on the right before Zulkifli delivered a cross into the penalty area. Ilhan’s effort ricocheted off the post before finding the net, completing a memorable brace on his competitive debut for the Sailors.
The performance was particularly significant because it marked Ilhan’s return to the Singapore Premier League after nearly four years abroad.
He joined Lion City Sailors from Thai League 1 side BG Pathum United in July on a two-year contract, following spells in Belgium and Thailand. His last SPL appearance came in 2022 with Albirex Niigata, now known as FC Jurong.
Tampines Hit the Woodwork Twice
The scoreline could have been very different.
Tampines created opportunities to pull a goal back, but the woodwork repeatedly came to the Sailors’ rescue.
In the 33rd minute, Hide Higashikawa — the previous season’s SPL Player of the Year — found himself with an opportunity after Yuki Kobayashi’s long ball caught the Sailors defence out. With goalkeeper Victor Aznar Ussen out of position, however, Higashikawa’s effort struck the post.
Just before halftime, Seiga Sumi came even closer, firing a powerful effort from around 25 metres that was again denied by the woodwork.
Tampines pushed forward after the interval but could not find a way through, allowing the Sailors to protect their advantage and claim the first piece of silverware of the new Singapore football season.
Sweet Revenge After Last Year’s Shock
The victory also carried an extra layer of significance.
Tampines had stunned Lion City Sailors 4-1 in last season’s Community Shield, taking the trophy in emphatic fashion. The Sailors entered this year’s meeting determined to reverse that result — and did so without conceding a goal.
It was also a particularly strong response from a Sailors side undergoing significant change.
The club brought in 11 new signings during the offseason, with seven of those new arrivals starting the Community Shield. Only Kyoga Nakamura and Bart Ramselaar retained their starting places from the team’s final league match against Tampines in May, according to local coverage.
Sailors Overcome Coaching Turmoil
The trophy triumph came just days after another major storyline rocked the club.
Lion City Sailors parted ways with Spanish head coach Jesús Casas on Sept. 1, only five days before the Community Shield. Assistant coach Varo Moreno was placed in interim charge.
Despite the disruption, Moreno guided the revamped squad to an impressive opening victory.
For the Sailors, the win offers an early indication that their extensive offseason changes can translate into results on the pitch.
For Ilhan, it could hardly have been a better homecoming.
After scoring four goals during Singapore’s run to the semifinals of the recent ASEAN Championship, he immediately carried that momentum into club football with two goals in his first start for his new team.
What Comes Next?
The Community Shield victory gives Lion City Sailors their first trophy of the 2026/27 campaign, but the real test begins when the Singapore Premier League season gets underway.
The Sailors are scheduled to face Hougang United on Sept. 12, while Tampines begin their league campaign against Balestier Khalsa on Sept. 11.
With a new-look squad, an interim coach and a returning Singapore star already scoring goals, the Sailors have sent an unmistakable message before the league season even begins:
