Suspect in Fatal Cebu Hit-and-Run Arrested After Vehicle Overturns

A 21-year-old driver has been arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene of a road crash in Cebu City that left a pedestrian dead.

The incident happened early Sunday, February 8, near the entrance of Maria Luisa Subdivision in Barangay Banilad.

The victim was identified as Kingston Ralph Cheng, a young entrepreneur and founder of The Mill Lifestyle Cafe at Ayala Center Cebu.

Crash turns fatal

According to police, the incident began when the suspect was driving a Toyota Innova at high speed.

The vehicle reportedly first collided with a parked Toyota Vios near One Paseo.

Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly accelerated away from the scene.

As he fled, the Innova struck Cheng, who was walking near a resto-bar.

The impact threw the victim against a nearby utility pole, leaving him critically injured.

A Cebu City government ambulance brought Cheng to a private hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Suspect’s vehicle overturns

The driver continued fleeing after the collision but eventually lost control of the Innova.

The vehicle overturned several metres away along Paseo Eulalia inside Maria Luisa Subdivision.

Police subsequently took the injured driver into custody while he received medical treatment under hospital arrest.

Authorities also found that the suspect allegedly could not produce a valid driver’s licence or the vehicle’s registration documents.

Charges being prepared

Police are preparing charges against the suspect, including reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.

The case remains under investigation as authorities continue documenting the sequence of collisions and gathering evidence.

The incident has also shocked Cebu’s business community, where Cheng was known as the founder of The Mill Lifestyle Cafe.

The fatal crash has renewed concerns about the consequences of fleeing an accident scene, particularly when a collision involving a vehicle results in serious injury or death.

Authorities are expected to pursue the case as the investigation continues.
