Crystal Jade Shutters Great World Outlet, Marking Its Third Singapore Closure in 2026

Singapore restaurant group Crystal Jade has closed its Hong Kong Kitchen outlet at Great World, marking its third outlet closure in the city-state this year as the company reviews its restaurant network amid changing market conditions.

The Great World outlet ceased operations on Sept. 1, with the premises subsequently reclaimed by the mall’s landlord, GWC Commercial.

The closure was confirmed by Crystal Jade as part of its ongoing review of its operations and outlet network.

Third Crystal Jade outlet to close this year

The Great World closure follows the shutdown of Crystal Jade outlets at Suntec City and Hillion Mall earlier in 2026.

The restaurant group also closed its Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao outlet at Holland Village in 2025 after two decades of operations, although that closure was attributed to the expiry of its lease.

Following the latest closure, Crystal Jade has 15 outlets remaining in Singapore across six restaurant brands.

The group has not indicated that it plans to withdraw from the Singapore market.

Instead, it said it remains committed to maintaining a sustainable long-term presence in its home market.

Landlord takes back Great World premises

A notice dated Sept. 2 was placed outside the former Hong Kong Kitchen outlet, stating that the unit had been taken back by GWC Commercial.

The restaurant’s final day of operations was Sept. 1.

Crystal Jade said the closure was a commercial decision made as part of its continuing assessment of its business and outlet network.

The company said the review is intended to ensure that its operations remain aligned with evolving market conditions and its long-term business priorities.

Employees offered redeployment opportunities

The closure also affected staff working at the Great World outlet.

Crystal Jade said affected employees had been informed directly and would be supported with redeployment opportunities within the group where possible.

The company expressed its appreciation to customers who had supported the outlet during its operations.

It also stressed that Singapore remains its home market despite the recent closures.

Crystal Jade continues to operate across Singapore

Despite closing three outlets this year, Crystal Jade continues to operate a sizeable network of restaurants across Singapore.

Its remaining concepts include Hong Kong Kitchen, Golden Palace, Pavilion and La Mian Xiao Long Bao, among others.

The group’s outlets span different segments of the Chinese dining market, ranging from casual dim sum and noodle restaurants to higher-end Cantonese dining.

Its restaurant network continues to include locations in major shopping malls and neighbourhood centres.

A challenging period for Singapore’s restaurant industry

Crystal Jade’s latest closure comes amid broader challenges facing Singapore’s food and beverage sector.

Restaurants continue to contend with high rental costs, manpower shortages, rising operating expenses and changing consumer spending patterns.

Competition has also intensified as malls and dining destinations seek to attract customers with new concepts, international brands and refreshed food offerings.

For established restaurant groups, maintaining outlets in every location may therefore become less attractive when rental and operating costs no longer match customer demand.

Crystal Jade looking at new opportunities

The company has previously indicated that it is evaluating opportunities for new outlets in other parts of Singapore.

That suggests the recent closures should not necessarily be viewed as a retreat from the market.

Instead, Crystal Jade appears to be reshaping its physical footprint by reviewing individual locations and determining which outlets fit its longer-term strategy.

The group was founded in Singapore in 1991 and has grown into one of the country’s best-known Chinese restaurant brands, with operations extending beyond Singapore.

Its continued presence at major locations shows that the company remains focused on the local market even as it adjusts its outlet network.

What the closure means for Crystal Jade

The Great World shutdown is the latest sign that even established restaurant brands are reassessing their presence in Singapore’s increasingly competitive dining industry.

With 15 outlets still operating locally, Crystal Jade remains a major player.

But three closures in one year indicate that the group is willing to make difficult commercial decisions when individual locations no longer fit its business plans.

For diners who regularly visited the Great World Hong Kong Kitchen, the outlet may be gone, but Crystal Jade’s wider Singapore network remains in operation as the group looks to adapt to changing consumer habits, rents and market conditions.
