The 2026 Ballon d’Or race is rapidly turning into a blockbuster showdown, and Lamine Yamal believes only one player stands between him and football’s most prestigious individual prize: Kylian Mbappé.
The Barcelona star says his spectacular season with both club and country gives him a strong claim to the award—but Mbappé’s extraordinary goalscoring numbers have made the contest far from straightforward.
“Mbappé and I are the two best in the world,” Yamal said in an interview clip shared by Movistar, according to Reuters.
Yamal also made it clear that he believes he deserves the award because of what he achieved during the season.

Yamal’s biggest argument is silverware.
The 19-year-old played a major role in Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph and helped Barcelona successfully defend their LaLiga title. He was also named LaLiga’s best player for the 2025-26 season, strengthening his case for the individual award.
Mbappé’s case is built differently.
The Real Madrid and France forward finished as the top scorer in the 2026 World Cup, LaLiga and Champions League, despite ending the season without a major team trophy. Reuters reports that he scored 15 Champions League goals, 25 in LaLiga and 22 at the World Cup, with his World Cup tally making him the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.
That creates one of the biggest debates surrounding this year’s award:

Mbappé has already made his position clear.
Earlier this month, he argued that the Ballon d’Or is an individual award and insisted that he had done enough to win it despite not collecting major silverware. He also declared that he did not believe any player was better than him during the season.

While Yamal sees Mbappé as his principal rival, the official Ballon d’Or race is considerably more crowded.
The 30-player men’s shortlist includes Ousmane Dembélé, Harry Kane, Lionel Messi, Rodri, Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, Achraf Hakimi and others, meaning the Barcelona teenager’s two-player framing doesn’t necessarily reflect the broader voting landscape.
Last year’s winner, Ousmane Dembélé, remains among the nominees, while Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has emerged as another major contender in several power rankings. The Guardian, for example, placed Kane at No. 1 in its September 9 ranking, demonstrating just how open the race remains.
Sports Illustrated also described the 2026 contest as unusually open, with several stars having legitimate claims based on major trophies, World Cup performances and individual statistics.
